Great Book for Beginner Actors

This is a beginner level book, though the writer would get a little angry with that comment. By "beginner" I mean those who haven't auditioned professionally a lot. If you haven't been on more auditions than you can count, you'll find you can learn a lot from this book. There's great descriptions of the casting process and what is expected of the actor, do's and don't's for the actor, and information on how to prepare for auditions.

One of the Top Ten Audition Books

Acting and getting work as an actor are two completetly different things. You want to learn how to audition? Start with this book.

Actors' Bible and Great Tool for Writers

If you want to be a WORKING actor in Hollywood, the read this book - several times, and continue re-reading it every year or so to your skills honed, to remind you of what got you where you are.

Outside of a masterclass with a Sanford Meisner-type or a Ute Hagen, this well-written, well-crafted book will teach you a tremendous amount in regards to make a character yours with little or no time to prepare. It will give you the skills to leave a lasting impression on casting directors everywhere.

Shurtleff's technique extends to once you have the role as well, preparation required to get the role will also assist you in making the role memorable.

It's also extremely helpful for screenwriters and playwrights, because it should give you insight on how to craft scenes for maximum impact by understanding how actors mine scenes for character, passion and emotion.

Not just for actors

Auditioning is one of the scariest things we will ever choose to do and this book allows the actor to better understand the positions of the few people auditioning / interviewing us. Mr. Shurtleff lets us into the professional lives of these people, showing us that they're not big, frightening ogres trying to crush us in one blow, just people trying not to screw-up themselves. My copy of this book is in terrible condition from being read and reread over and over again - I love this book!

Must read

Quick read and more helpful than most of the garbage you will find on acting.
