GREAT READ

Very good Fantasy for young adults.

Readers will immediately begin to parallel the story with similar books like The Chronicles of Narnia, Leven Thumps, and especially the Spiderwick series, but finally the world of FableHaven will devour the reader into its own respective realm of fantasy fiction.

Kendra and her brother Seth discover a hidden and guarded world within their own - a world of fairies, sprites, unicorns, witches, and trolls. My eleven year old found the book a bit dark for her tastes, but I found the book to be just about right - nothing so spooky as to bring on a nightmare or anything.

It is an easy read, the plot is constructed with fluidity, and the details are pretty vivid. The scene with Kendra milking the enormous cow is something I don't believe Hollywood will be able to capture, but this book will probably get made into a movie - and it deserves to be as much as any other popular book of its kind.

Overall - some good material for young readers.

Couldn't put it down!

My 10 year old daughter asked me to write a quick review for this book. She absolutely LOVED it. She says the plot is compelling and unlike anything else she has read (and she reads A LOT!). She was completely pulled into the story and was fascinated by the characters (especially the witch).

Fairy Tale Nouveau

This book gets so many things right that other fantasy novels for children typically miss. First of all, the adults are smart, reasonable, and willing to trust the children when they show they are worthy to be trusted. Second, there is a strong theme running through the book about how keeping the rules affords you strong protection against evil, and how breaking the rules can have serious, unforseen consequences. It is the cautious, obedient character who has the power to save the day at the end because she has kept the rules of Fablehaven and offended no one.

Brandon Mull has a spectacular imagination. His powers of description are stunning, and he is endlessly inventive. The fantastic creatures that inhabit Fablehaven are fascinatingly varied in their personalities, intelligence, and behavior. He's not bad with humans either. His two main characters scrap so much like real siblings I wonder if he bugged his kids' rooms and listened to their arguments as research for his book. The book is not quite Newbury quality - there are a few places where the dialogue stops sounding real and instead becomes a thinly veiled explanation for the reader. In spite of this, Mull does create a very convincing sense of peril in Fablehaven, a place both wonderful and treacherous. It is just the sort of fantasy world you love to believe in.

A wonderful escape.

I bought this book to read in preparation for a visit from Brandon Mull to my sons school. I am so thrilled I did because I have truly enjoyed both Fablehaven books. Mr. Mull knows just how to grab your attention and hold it tight. I am now anxiously awaiting the 3rd Fablehaven book.
