Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia

THIS IS A GREAT BOOK and is a good standby for when my epocrates is down and is also a good suppliment, as lists drugs in categories so its helpful to look up all drugs in one category (not just in alphabetic order like epocrates).
However this year I bought the wrong size. Pocket size is actually not the smallest size and is a little bulky to fit in with everything else that I carry !!

The lab coat pocket version has a heavy weight plastic outer cover thats great for durability which the smaller size version doesnt have. Also, though the content is the same as the smaller size version, the print is larger and therefore easier to read than the timy print in the smaller version. For its size this is a fabulous little reference which includes brand and generic names, indications, adult & peds dosing, special comments as to warnings, forms the med comes in, and relative cost indicated by the number of "$" signs displayed. I finished residency approx. 15 yrs. ago. Overall, this is a fabulous little drug reference book that can be used on a daily basis and quickly. It is well worth the money.

Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia

I'm a PA in an Emergency department. I discovered this book by chance at the beginning of my career. It really is the greatest thing since sliced bread! I use it everyday on almost every patient for one thing or another. I give one to all the docs and PAs in the dept. for Christmas and if they don't get one pronto when the new one comes out they howl. My girlfriend is an internist and works part time as a hospitalist. Though I never thought such learned minds such as theirs would appreciate (or need!) this little tool, I'm now having to supply the hospitalist staff as well. Its just amazing what is crammed between the covers. If you are PDA addicted, I suppose you might find fault, but to me they are light, portable, quick to use and reliable. In addition the authors have a sense of humor. Check out the question you can answer to win a free edition, or the key where they explain the notations denoting if the drug is metabolized mainly in the liver or kidney. Rather than encountering its limitations, the more you use it, the more you find all that it has to offer!

I purchase the new edition every year and keep it in my lab coat pocket at all times. I use it every day because I still can't figure out how to load ePocrates into my Palm, and Micromedex irritates the bejeebers out of me by providing WAY too much detail (it's an electronic PDR, for pete's sake!).
The Tarascon pocket pharma is concise, gives me the adult & peds doses I need for various indications (eg. for antimicrobials it outlines appropriate dosages for different sites of infection; dosages for bipolar vs seizures vs migraine prophylaxis for various anticonvulsant meds, etc).
It will indicate if renal or age adjustments to dose are needed, and gives only highly pertinent / significant warnings.
I find the smaller version is too hard to read (small print), plus it doesn't give me an adequate degree of info.
