A Wonderful Book

From the first sentence of CHANGE ME INTO ZEUS'S DAUGHTER to the last I was enthralled by the descriptive power and honesty of Barbara Robinette Moss's prose. A book like this makes one happy to be living in what has been called "the age of the memoir" and this memoir centainly ranks among the best along with ANGELA'S ASHES. Ms. Moss has the ability to convey the fear and uncertainties that beset a child growing up in circumstances of abuse, hunger and poverty in a way that cuts to the heart. I am amazed by those people who can survive and even thrive spiritually in such an environment. No doubt her mother's love of literature and music that she conveyed to her children was a positive influence, but I think that Ms. Moss's inborn character and determination is most to be credited for her transformation and success. I was touched by her close relationships with her siblings and the devotion of her Aunt Janet through years of chaos. I would recommend this book without reservation.

A Must Read

An experiencial journey into poverty, struggle, aspects of southern culture, abuse, as well as survival, this book graps you into the inner soul of the writer. It is not a story of self-pity, but one of determination. It is a book that demands your continued attention and interest. It is also a book to share with others.

A wonderful story of downhome Southern living

Barbara's childhood is a two-sided tale of adjustment and/or abuse. Of course by all means, she is a survivor. And was able to mold herself into an independent person with goals and plans already set when she was still a child. Her love/hate relationships with her parents helped her fight more to improve herself as a way out of her hard Southern uprbringing.

This book was so engrossing to read!

I could NOT put this book down. I started reading it Thursday night and finished it Monday night. As sad and terrible as Barbara Moss' life was she managed not to come across as self pitting, even though one could never blame her if she did. The hell that these children called their life was unimaginable, and for her to have come out of that as well balanced as she seemed to is really amazing!

Do yourself a BIG favor and read this book!

A Book of Hope

In writing this memoir, Ms. Moss wanted to reclaim her family. In doing so, we are allowed to claim and embrace them also. Her experiences are unique, revealing deprivation and horror as well as joy and love. Even so, there is a piece of "every woman" in her life and in her. As she grows and struggles and learns and develops and is ultimately victorious, she shows us the way to our own healing. Such honesty and courage. Wonderful book!
