my neighborhood
compelling memoir, all the more so because I live a few blocks from where Smith grew up. I started the book last night, spent the morning reading, finished it this afternoon and then drove up and down the streets where it all took place. a bleak rainy day today; a lot of ghosts.
Kept me reading
I loved this book. I thought it was extremely well written and blended humor with emotion, compassion, reality, and suspense. I admired the author's frankness and style. I had shoulder surgery and was going to be in the house for a few weeks, so I stocked up on books I had been wanting to read. I liked this better than McCourt's Teacher Man, and I'm and English teacher. I highly recommend you check this out. I have never read any of her fiction, but this memoir was a real page-turner.
A great read!
A friend gave me this book as a gift because his grandparents, Mommy and Daddy Welch, are mentioned in the book and I think he wanted to brag about them. I was a bit nervous that I wouldn't like this book but was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
Although this book can be enjoyed by anyone, in any part of the country, I found this book especially intriguing because I grew up in the 70's in a suburb of Hartford only about 20 minutes away from where the author grew up. While the author grew up in what seemed to be a safe neighborhood, I can't help to think that what happened in her neighborhood in the 50's with the molestation and murder of a young girl may have been the start of how this area is now known to be a crime infested area.
The 50's don't seem that long ago but when you read this book you can see how much times have changed over the years. Most importantly, the Sox finally won another World Series and like the Tirone Sox fans, the Sox fans who weren't with us when it happened were with us in our memories.
Overall, this is a great book that I will recommend to friends.
Engrossing
A wonderful book about a multiple of things, I loved it from start to finish. And I am looking forward to making the pineapple pie recipe at the end of the book. Thank you Mary-Ann for sharing your story.
A sad telling tale of how we handled this type of matter
It is true. Things like this got swept under the rug and no one spoke of them. It did effect the lives of more than just the victims. I was a child in Hartford and so know the area and found that interesting. I thought this was well written and I think it is a "good" read.
