Pure fun

A loosely connected set of stories about the classroom on the top of Wayside School, which is peculiar in that the building was accidentally constructed sideways, with thirty small floors instead of one sprawling level. Each chapter bears the name of a particular student, who is generally the focus of the story. The stories themselves are whimsical, ranging from a boy who is tempted to pull the pigtails of the girl sitting in front of him to a rat attempting to pose as a student.
The Good and the Bad:
I like that Sachar has written a new kind of children's book, which can occasionally teach a lesson or thread a coherent story, but is mostly focused on entertaining the reader. The stories are loosely connected, but work as stand-alones, making it ideal for a nightly bedtime story. That some of the stories fall flat doesn't matter so much, since there is always the next story to rescue the moment. Unlike Holes, which I would have to describe as his masterpiece, there is very little that is touching or asks for emotional investment. Instead, we get pure silliness.

Robert Reviews This Book

Louis Sachar's Sideways Stories from Wayside School is a wonderful piece of literature containing 30 stories of Wayside School. Wayside School consists of 30 classrooms, one on top of the other instead of side by side. The architect was very sorry.

Louis Sachar has created a masterpiece for the child's mind and imagination. This book can be read by students in their first years of school for it's appropriate language and comprehension level. It is also entertaining for the children because the stories are very much like a child's mind.

There are many morals in these stories and they are all have a positive influnce on the child's mind . They are all also easily applied in elementary and middle schools. Thirty stories, with many morals, all told and set in an imaginative world help to stimulate the imagination and the character development of the young readers. Who else could accomplish this but Sachar?

Nick Reviews This Book

"Sideways Stories from Wayside School", a book by Louis Sachar, is a group of sideways stories about Wayside School. To be more specific, they are the stories of the students and staff of the school. These stories are way weird.
I think this book is a great book for people of all ages, especially younger kids. Kids see this book as 30 fun stories that are simple to read. On the other hand, boys (teens), by that age, are less interested in the plot then what it hides. For example, in Sideways Stories, most stories are somewhat twisted but have simple and very important morals. Adults would also like this book for the good morals but would most likely look to more difficult books for this kind of reading.

Graciela - Farmersville, CA

I like Sideway Stories from Wayside School, especially because of two chapters. Chapter 20 is about a girl named Kathy that says dumb stuff and is really funny. Chapter 1 is about Mrs. Gorf, she is mean and she turns children into apples.
I think this book is funny. If you like funny books you should read this book and other books about Wayside School. I recommend you read this book.

Mike Reviews This Book

I believe that every author has to take a break. Every author after writing lots of successful books wants to do something different. I believe that every author wants to be controversial at times. Sooner or later every author wants to break the mold by writing a book that is original. For Louis Sachar this was "Sideway Stories from Wayside School."
"Sideway Stories From Wayside School" is an unusual book. It contains many different stories of this unusual school. By reading these stories we notice, that the audience the book is directed to, is children. But for those with a trained eye they can notice that there are many hidden principles and ideas that strike the mind subconsciously. If "Sideway Stories from Wayside School" is read more keenly you will notice much more than the funny (and sometimes ridiculous) stories.
I believe that this great little book contains many features that are waiting to be discovered and I recommend you to read Louis Sachar unusual book with your eyes peeled and remember: every author has to take a break once in a while.
