Small steps, big heart

It's not every day that I finish about as say, "Wow, that's a good book," to an empty room. But that's what happened when I finished reading this book. I had really enjoyed Holes, and completely expected to enjoy this book as well. What I didn't expect was how moved I was.

Sachar has a way of making the impossible seem extraordinarily believable because he has these amazing characters who can pull it off. You want to believe that these incredibly human characters can do anything because you can see the greatness within them--even when they lack faith in themselves.

From the moment ex-convict Theodore "Armpit" Johnson meets pop star Kaira Spears "DeLeon", you hold your breath in anticipation for great things to happen. And Sachar doesn't disappoint. The plot if fast-moving, the dialogue is both delightful and realistic, and even the pop song lyrics along the way bring the plot forward rather than interrupted the story line like in so many other books.

I was filled with hope for Armpits future despite the heartache, and I hope to see many more stories like this come from the boys at Camp Green Lake. I couldn't have put this book down even if I had wanted to.

Louis Sachar, author of Newberry Award winning book Holes, has yet again managed to write another outstanding book, Small Steps. It features X-ray and Armpit from Holes and they're bringing another adventure with them.

Armpit is back home from the dreaded Camp Green Lake and is happy with how things are going. X-ray is back with another one of his plans. There is only one word that describes this situation.. TROUBLE!!!

Louis Sachar has captured the minds of kids from the ages of 9-15 with this amazing tale. Published in 2006, this book is for readers of all interests especially realistic fiction lovers.

This book is wonderful in many ways like its interesting story line, word/ character choice, and much more. The author describes each character's traits with vivid action, dialogue, and thoughts. A strength this author has is how he uses effective writing techniques such as foreshadowing. This hooking story makes you want to keep reading the book to find out what will happen at the end.
This should be enough to tell you what a great book this is! The only way to find out the full story is to actually read the book. So go out and check this book out of your local library and feel good about your choice!

Small Steps by Louis Sachar

Vanessa La7a. Small Steps was the sequel to Holes carrying out the life of Armpit and X-ray which are two characters in Holes. As soon as Armpit got back home which is in a town named Austin, he set goals for himself:1-Graduate from high school, 2-Get a job, 3-Save his money, 4-Avoid situations that might turn violent, and 5-Lose the name Armpit. Since he was good at digging, it was easy for him to get a job working for a landscaping company. He lives in an apartment next to a ten-year old girl named Ginny. One day he meets X-ray who has a scheme to get fast money. Kaira DeLeon was making her way to Austin for a concert. X-ray wanted to scalp some tickets for fast and easy money, so he asked to borrow about 600 dollars from Armpit. Armpit had saved up about 800 dollars and didn't want to give money to X-ray, but not knowing what he was getting into; he let X-ray borrow the money. After they sold almost all of the tickets except 2, Armpit asked X-ray to save them so he could take Ginny. X-ray agreed to keep the tickets for him but then he got an offer for 300 dollars for each ticket. He decided to make copies of them and sell the real ones, then give Armpit the fake ones. Nobody knew about it until the day of the concert. Armpit was getting wrestled down by two police officers when the Mayor told them to let him go because Ginny was having a seizure. Ginny had celebral palsy, and she stuttered on most words and had these seizures when she got too excited. Meanwhile, Kaira DeLeon had her own conflicts in her personal life. El Genius, her stepfather was cheating on her mother and she didn't like him not only because of that, but also because her mother made him her manager. A little bit before she went on stage for her performance, she heard about Ginny and came to help. Ginny and Armpit had received backstage passes and because of this whole conflict, Armpit had made a relationship with Kaira DeLeon. They went out on dates and traveled a little bit together, until the day where Armpit went wrong in Chinatown, San Diego. Not only did he have issues with Kaira DeLeon now, but the police are asking about a ticket scalper named Armpit because of two phony tickets at a Kaira DeLeon's concert. If you want to find out what happens next, read the book to find out. I like the book because there were many surprises. I also liked how the author gave you Kaira Deleon's' thoughts too, so you could understand everything that was going on. I recommend this book for fifth grade and up.
