Enlightening to an intermediate user of Photoshop!

I am truly impressed with the author's ability to educate and enlighten me in an area that I thought I had understood pretty well. She does so in a matter of fact, step by step approach. If you are confused by the channels pallete in Photoshop, or if you want to learn how to make excellent selections for making layered collages, this is the book for you. I have been using Photoshop for over 3 years now, and I am glad I waited to purchase this book. It assumes you have a good general knowledge of how Photoshop works. If you don't have that experience look for Ben Long's book Titled Studio Techniques. I highly recommend this book for intermediate users of Photoshop.

6 stars

This book has got to be one of the most well-written books on Photoshop I have ever read. It's not even the topics that are covered that I love the most, it's the way the author can explain them to you that makes me love this book so much!
This book covers a heck of a lot of techniques about compositing and masking in Photoshop and just because a lot of time is spent on masking hair doesn't mean I only know how to mask hair now. The book is about the concept behind the job rather than just canned instructions.

Definitely a book that every true photoshop enthusiast should read. Not aimed for beginners though.

AWESOME, AWESOME. AWESOME

This book is awesome. I have learned so much from this book and will keep it handy for a reference book. It is worth buying. I could not recommend this book enough. I will purchase her other book now. I can sum it up in three words--BUY, BUY, BUY. You wont be sorry. You will need to know the basics of photoshop first and then this book will put you above and beyond your expectations.

excellent book about one of the BIG topics in PS

To be honest I was somewhat uncertain about buying this book, mainly because it has happened to me more than once that when a book seems to be about an specific matter it end up been about much more than what the title says (in other words: a general book but with some "extras" about the subject referred).
But I'm glad to say that this isn't the case. The book as the author says should be called "Selections, masking and compositing", and it's really about that, providing a comprehensive view on how to make great selections, with wich tool, and the different ways to make the selection, with the pros/cons of each one along with several tips.
The author classifies the selections (and the techniques used to make them) based upon:
1)Shape and form; 2)Tone and color; 3)Edge and fine detail; 4)Translucency and light; 5)Opposites and differences

So as you can see this isn't a book for begginers (not the first one anyway), but for advanced users who spend time making hard selections to integrate images within another ones.

The step-by-step examples use Photoshop CS, but I doubt using PS7 would be much different.

Would I buy it again if I loose it? you can bet.
Would I buy the "Retouching and Restoration" book too? I did it already :-)

Terrific book - mostly

This work by Eisman is really a superior treatise on masking, etc. There's quite a bit of review in it but I guess that's a good idea (and even there you will pick up new ideas). When she gets into the real subject matter it is great.

I have only one real complaint and that is that the itsy, bitsy illustrations are simply too small to see out what she is trying to illustrate. Maybe my eyes are getting too old........!
