A chilling, yet insightful read

After reading The Lovely Bones, I was dying to get my hands on a copy of Lucky. Sebold's horrifying story frightened me more than any novel I had ever read before. But it was worth it. Through the retelling of her experience with rape and the emotional aftermath, I gained a new perspective on the entire situation. Overall, it was a gripping memoir and a must read if you were a fan of the Lovely Bones, although the books are very different.

A gift

So hard to read, and so worth reading. Brutal and brutally honest, this book is a must read for anyone who has survived abuse or trauma esp. at a young age. The more it is shared, the less alone we feel, and the triumph of one, as shown in this story, is a light to everyone. It must have been terribly difficult for the author to write this book and then to send it out into the world. It was a gift for her to do it.

Okay

This was certainly an interesting look at what happens after a rape. However, the end was conusing and not tied together well. I enjoyed the book but it's not something I want to read again. It goes into how her life went down the toilet, but not how she got back out.

Pleased

The book arrived very quickly and so far I am very pleased with the book. It is as good as the review said it would be. Thanks :-)

I absolutely love this woman!

I wish that there was a public email address for Alice Sebold because I would like her to know how much "The Lovely Bones" and "Lucky" have impacted me. This woman is an amazing writer! For those reviewers who have the audacity to give even four stars -- would you be able to write down in detail the most horrific event of your life so vividly and open without falling to pieces? The writing is incredibly controlled. I couldn't find a hint of emotion. Just a lot of sarcasm which at times I find funny -- a true defense mechanism for not breaking down. This book deserves five stars -- period! Just for the courage and bravery and work it took to experience the evil over and over again. In first drafts, in second drafts, in third drafts, in copyediting...every time this manuscript came back, she had to revisit that scene over and over again. Thank you Alice for your courage...I do read between the lines!
