Eye candy with real substance

As a card-carrying astrophysicist, I'm a more finicky eater than most.
Yet I'm very impressed by this book, perfect for coffee tables and serious reading alike. It combines stunning imagery with excellent informative yet accessible explanations.

Beautiful and well written book

This is a beautifully designed, illustrated, and well written book, as I've come to expect from DK. There are a number of large, coffee-table sized, "high end" astronomy books out there featuring photos from the Hubble telescope, and I think the DK volume is one of the best. As with another writer here, as boy I was a big fan of the Time-Life Science and Nature series, and I always wished they'd issued an updated set, since the book on Astronomy by David Bermamini (who also wrote a book about WWII entitled The Fleet in the Window) was one of my favorites.

The photos of the Deep Space Field and great Abell cluster showing far away galaxies are awe-inspiring, along with all the other illustrations in the book. Everything from the constellations to deep space objects gets covered. Along with the revolution in cosmology that modern string theory has created, there was almost a second revolution as a result of the Hubble telescope in our ability to image and visualize astronomical objects, from the moon and closer planets to galaxies and quasars billions of light years distant. I once read that because of the interference from the atmosphere, even the gigantic 200-inch Palomar telescope, which was the largest telescope in the world for something like 50 years, could be exceeded by a 3-inch scope on the moon!

Overall, a fine book on a fascinating subject and one of the best high-end photo books out there on astronomy. And last but not least, the text is well written too and nicely integrated into the overall design of the book.

Astonishing

I received this book for Christmas in 2005, and this book is simply astonishing in its quality and breadth of information and presentation of astronomy to the reader. I was blown away.

A scientist by trade, I know how difficult it is to make even 1 or 2 good scientific figures for a publication. And this _large_ book has brilliant scientific figures on every page conveying what are often very complex principles in a very comprehendable manner. The book is simply packed with stunning astrophotography in addition to the wonderful illustrations.

Not only it this book extremely pretty to look at, it covers a huge range of topics in astronomy and delivers real, substantive information--rather than the superficial glance "pretty" books like this usually deliver.

Best Book I have Ever Read.

I have just received my copy of 'Universe, the definitive visual guide' from Amazon and I can say it is the best book I have ever owned. It is not just an Astronomy book although it covers that vast subject area like no other.

Everything we should know about our Earth, the Moon and surrounding planets, Galaxies and Nebulas to the 'edge' of the Universe are lavishly illustrated and knowledgeably explained, leaving just enough of the mysteries for us to look at and wonder.

Just open this beautiful, huge and heavy book at any page at random and you will be blown away. The quality of print, photographs, animations and artwork is unsurpassed and the research and, yes, centuries of history and knowledge that have made this book possible are all laid out. They all combine to truly make it 'the Definitive Visual Guide'. You will need no other to understand your place in the Universe.

It took some courage to undertake the production of such a magnificent volume of over 500 pages at such a give-away price and we all wish the DK company success. But there is a different and frightening kind of bravery needed to really show how insignificant and indeed random is the existance our planet Earth. You will see how we were formed, what a tiny place we occupy and finally how we will be swallowed up and snuffed out by what is now the friendly, but expanding, Sun. That is of course if the approaching Anromeda Galaxy doesn't get us first.

This is an unforgettable work of art and science into which you can dip at random anytime. It will truly change your life and the way you see things, for the better. If you only ever again buy one book, make sure it is this: 'Universe, the Definitive Visual Guide'.

The Best Visual Guide on Astronomy!

This has got to be THE best visual enclyclopedia of Astronomy I have seen. Not only visually but very informative on all counts.

It is very up to date as well: 2005. It even has the cassinni probe info in it!

Very detailed information from the history of astronomy, including the space programs, to the planets and all thier moons, as well as our own planet. Excellent sections on stars and galaxies, nebula, ect with many fine examples and facts. The visual presentation is just fantastic. There is also a section on telescopes.

Another section deals with the the night sky and actually has
excellent detailed star charts for each constellation, as well as what it looks like to the nakid eye ( although some are taken from what it looks like in the southern hemishere, which is OK, but just upside down or skewed a bit :-)There are also monthly sky charts for both hemispheres, very detailed as well, with many DSO's plotted.

I highly recommend this book, a real treat and treasure to use and it's way more then a coffee book! Its really great to see something of this quality come out regarding our favorite subject: Astronomy!
