A Must-Have for Every Little Girl's Library

It's so refreshing to find a book that puts the female character not only as the hero, but who can stand on her own. It's a great change of pace from the traditional princess stories- something my little girl is obsessed with. I don't mind her love of the princess stories, but I love having this book in our collection to show her that there's another side. I love this book, and as soon as we got it out from the library, I purchased a copy for my daughters' library.

Nice heroine, simple illustrations, good story

This is a book which appeals to younger readers (2-4), but is better for the 4-8 age group as recommended. I say this because my younger children do follow elements of this story and enjoy it.

This is the story of Elizabeth whose castle is destroyed along with all her belongings and her future husband Prince Reginald is carried off by the Dragon. All which is left for her to wear is a paperbag. So following the trail of destruction she goes to rescue Reginald. When she reaches the Dragons lair she has to trick the dragon to rescue reginald. Interestingly this is almost identical to the story of the Iron man when he challenges the dragon in Ted Hughes' story.

Having freed Reginald Elizabeth is disgusted to discover that he is not too happy with her. Her hair is a mess and she is dressed extremely badly. Luckily Elizabeth has a great deal of fortitude (having proved it already) and tells Reginald (very politely) what he can do with his fine hair and beautiful clothes.

Some nice messages here for discussion with older children (appearance vs substance - good manners and so on). The illustrations are simple but evocative. A nice classic story.

Great book for young girls!!

We loved this book. Not only is it a very quick and entertaining read for me, my 6 year old adored the princess. There are several "messages" at work in this book which are positive reinforcements for girls of all ages. I don't want to spoil the story for anyone but it is a delightful and contemporary story that needs to be part of every young girl's library.

Great babyshower gift for a new baby girl!

As an early childhood educator, I strongly recommend this story to all families, particularly those with little girls that like princesses. This book sends a message which contradicts the images of passivity portrayed by Disney princesses and the like. It is a fabulous baby shower gift, particularly for those expecting a baby girl. It goes very well with "Princess Smarty Pants" as well as "Father Gander".

The ORIGINAL twist on a traditional tale.

Munsch writes kids stories like nobody else! He catches their attention, tells his stories and has a wry twist at the end. The topic is extremely empowering to young girls and the humor with which he tells his tale is for all readers...not just kids!
