War is hell...great depection
This is a great, modern war novel depicting the struggles of a group of soldiers. The romanticized notion of war has been thrown out the window with Ullian's use of graphic violence and coarse language making this the most realistic, war novel I have ever read. Not only must they combat enemies in the field, but they also wage battle in the their minds over their loyalty and patriotism. All in all, great book and I hope to read more from this author in the future.
New Eyes
I didn't necessarily like reading this exerpt, but I feel it served out its purpose: to explicitly show the horrors of war to us, Americans who live so far from it all. I thought it was narrow in that it showed such a low-class look at these soldiers, but I'm glad I understand more fully what war can do to a human spirit. Reading this gave me new eyes to understanding this war we're in.

Great Story
I was impressed by this short story. It gave me a better perspective of what the soldiers in Iraq have to go through on a daily basis. The language and descriptions made the story seem so real that I felt as though I was there alongside them. It also made me more grateful for the people who fight for my freedom that I so often take for granted.
Believeable Fiction
The reading was very exciting and eye opening. It really delved into the circumstances that soldiers are constantly in. If I were one of the characters though, it would not keep me awake if I had shot the kids. It's my life or theirs! so i rather be breathing than be dead and the kids a.k.a. guerrilla soldiers. It's just unfortunate that they have to die because of their elders who ask them to do these things. It also goes to show how primitive and fundamentalist their society is. I really enjoyed reading this short story because it makes you not feel sorry for the enemy, because that's how it should be!

the
World
by Peter Ullian is a cleaver and intelligent depiction of the war. Ullian brings what you see on the news and makes it reality. He shows that soldiers do feel saddened that they have killed children, but if their life is threatened they must take action. The vulgarity of the language often added for comic relief, which was very important with a story like this one. Although the story and characters were fictional, the reader felt like they knew the characters like they were their own friends. The fact that the soldiers argued about music and trivial things of that nature shows that they are real people and although war is so serious, it is needed in order to get through each day. One must sometimes focus on the minor things in life in order to get through the bigger stuff. Peter Ullian did an excellent job of captivating the reader's attention and I look forward to reading more of his works
