A good Sci-Fi read, made me think
I bought this on the recommendation of a few lists on Amazon. I was trying to get back the the basics of good thought provoking sci-fi with an action/military element. This book delivered!
The aspects of time dilation and how they could be facing an enemy from their future or past and how it took weeks to decelerate from lightspeed, whew.
The characters were well portrayed, the scenery amazing, and the ending...well, read it for yourself.
I have also read Ender's Game and Armor, in keeping with my current reading scheme. Both excellent and all three I'll read again.

Great Sci Fi read!
This was a surprising read for me. After seeing so many positive reviews, I still had no idea it would be as good as it was. The action-packed scenes of combat were mindblowing - you could tell Haldeman has some experience with real combat. However, as interesting as the action was - the most intriguing aspect of the book grounds itself in humanity and the build up of its characters.
I loved seeing the future through the main character's eyes as he returned from tours of duty. The storyline is obviously a parable to
war
n of the realities of war - and how it changes both the warrior and his perception of the world he is returning to. i.e.: Confusion caused by being home, but not feeling really 'at home' as it were. Its definitely at odds with the 'glory of war' theme of Starship Troopers. (Sorry, yes.. I too had to make a comparison.)
I recommend this book whether you are a sci-fi fan, or a just a fan of excellent storytelling of all types.

Point, Counter-point
Amazing book, fun read, thought provoking.
It is also the counter point to just about any point that starship troopers ever made.
CERTAINLY NOT THE BEST, BUT NEVER-THE-LESS A FUN READ
I must admit to having read better SiFi, on the other hand, I have certainly read worse. The overall premise of this work is good and certainly has a lot of potential.
War
s, futile wars, lasting for centuries, are not all that far fetched. The sillyness of the war here is not all that much different than some of our past wars. This work gives you something to think about. I did enjoy many of the characters in this work, although their developement could have been better at times. This is one of those works that I am glad I read, but I doubt if I will give it a second read. Recommend this one with reservations, it may not be everyones cup of tea.
