3rd grade class was heart broken that we had reached the end

The Wayside series is one of funniest, engaging, talented, mathematically rich and language rich books our class has enjoyed. We would stop and work out math problems resented all along the way. The best was the Pet Day in the third book. We did a fairly good job of figuring out the animals, their owners, and the pet's names from the clues provided. We would try to predict what could possible happen from the chapter titles, and who would be involved. Usually, we were left laughing too hard to check our predictions. The stories could be share experienced by the whole class because of the use of standard events, i.e. "Mrs. Jewls had Todd write his name on the board under the word DISCIPLINE." When it was an event that required cheering, the situation was written so well, that the class could cheer without being prompted. This series kept their attention and imaginations soaring. They were heart broken when it ended.

A must have for your elementary-school age children

The anthology "Stories from Wayside School" has something for everyone. The cafeteria jokes like liver in purple sauce and baloneos are gross enough to make my 7 year-old son laugh until he cries. And at the same time, the wordplay is clever enough that my 10 year-old daughter can appreciate the literalism, twisted logic and double-entendres. Both kids feel so sorry for two-strike Todd, that I have to keep reminding them that these are just made-up stories. (They are, aren't they?) My children look forward to bedtime so that they can hear about the kids from Wayside School. If you have children in elementary school, you must have this book!
