Relive childhood early reading memories!

As ever Scarry delivers a fine story book based on the growing child's everyday world brought the more to life by his inimical illustrations. Full of action and a well developed narrative which children from about 2 can follow verbally and trace with their finger across the page picture-by-picture, this is a book to truly delight adults and youngsters. If you remember Scarry from your own childhood, as many of you will, then those wide eyed smiling animal characters will immediately transport you back to 1968 (the date of the orginal book's publication). Note that this book is the abridged version, but loses nothing for that. We have a very bashed original and also Scarry's marvellous "366 Stories" - a story or poem for everyday of the year ( including Leap Years)...will they ever get round to publishing that great classic??? Enjoy "What Do People Do All Day" - the children will thank you for it in , oh, about 2028.

Abridged Edition is missing a third of the book

I bought my childhood favorite for my son. Unfortunately, only the abridged edition is now available, which is missing a third from the original book. I wish Random House will bring back the book that taught me so much as a child.

I can't recommend it highly enough!

I remember this wonderful book well from the last time I read it - in 3rd grade and that was 16 years ago. For the inquisitive child, this book will open their eyes. I bought a copy for my children recently and am pleased that I can still remember much of it - which shows what an influence this book was!

Lowly Worm is God!

I adored all of Richard Scarry's wonderful and informative books as a child, and this one is the best. As mentioned in another review, this edition is very much abridged and that's a shame. Better than nothing, I suppose, but nothing compares to the original.

A book that endures lifetimes!

My 3-year-old son and 40-something husband both adore this book! They spend hours and hours together reading and interacting with "What Do People Do All Day?" The amount of detail and creativity in this book is soaked up by my son -- I can almost see the cogs churning in his brain! This book will grow with him, too. He's so fascinated with the "how" and the "why" of the world, and this book answers his questions.
