A seamless web
In
Invisible
Man Ralph Ellison saw race, specifically the African race as making people invisible. In a brilliant juxtaposition of genre John Sanford's Lucas Davenport hunts killers of elderly art patrons and quilters. The killers are so well hidden in plain sight that they were even hired by the St Paul police to assist in one aspect of the investigation of the murder of a particularly wealthy lady. Thus we have not only Invisible
Prey
but invisible murderers to confound the best police work.
As Lucas begins to draw pertinent conclusions about the relationship of so many seemingly random crimes, the killers use their knowledge of the police investigation to confuse issues. The result is a seamless web of murder and other crimes most foul.
Sandford has earned a new spot in the pantheon of American mystery writers just beside Michael Connelly with this taut thriller. It is not to be missed

What A Tangled Web We Mortals Weave
Invisible
Prey
Having long been a fan of Sanfords Prey series, I was delighted to find his newest offering: Invisible Prey. This book is right up there with Sanfords best.
Lucas Davenport has a nasty political landmine to disarm. The president of the Minnesota Senate stands accused of statutory rape with a 15 year old girl. Lucas' boss, Rosemarie Roux, the Governor and other Democratic heavy hitters want this mess cleared up fast.
Meanwhile up on the hill, a wealthy woman and her maid are found brutally beaten to death and the mansion vandalized. Though distracted by the sex scandal, Lucas responds to Detective John Smith's call for help. As he walks the scene, he is vaguely troubled by the almost staged quality of this apparent home invasion.
Sanford excels at police procedurals, and Invisible Prey shines a clear light on all the steps that must be taken to bring closure to a complex case. This is far from boring. The characters are drawn with a skilled hand, illuminating the shadows and inner compulsions that drive each character. The author never resorts to the cheap tricks of one dimensional good/evil personas, or takes the easy outs. Instead, people are portrayed much as they are in life, painted in shades of grey, including Lucas Davenport himself.
When another death occurs, Lucas is visited by the victims grandaughter, Gabrielle Coombs, who informs him that the coroners findings are wrong, her grandmother, Marilyn Coombs didn't fall, but was murdered. As Lucas investigates this second death, he is drawn to Gabrielle, and elicits her help in tracking down information he badly needs.
As a side note, there is alot of interesting background on antiques and their values, including a book that is a must have for anyone wishing to learn more about this fascinating subject.
Antiques Price Guide 2007 (Antiques Price Guide)
As the bits and pieces of the mystery start to come together, they start impacting the sex case in frightening ways. But ultimately, the suspects set in motion the Unravelling of their tapestry of deception and greed..
If you're looking for a dense complex and highly absorbing read, don't miss Invisible Prey. I placed this in my Top 10 summer reads.

Des Martin
As usual a good read by John Sandford. However I really miss the old team of Sloane, Del, Marcie and others in the earlier books before Lucas Davenport went to the BCA. Previous books like Broken
Prey
and its predecessors were (in my opinion) better reads than
Invisible Prey
in which Lucas Davenport went it alone except for peripheral references to a couple of the old team of Sloane and Del. Maybe the author could bring them all together by having one or other of the earlier characters reminisce about old cases.
Another Great Book by a Super Author
I will give Mr. Sandford credit for keeping his creative writing skills hone. In my opinion, he did allow himself to fall into the trap of a number of these mass market mystery/thriller authors by just keep cranking out these second rate stories every 2 months.
In the
Invisible
Prey
, I was impressed with Sandford's ability to bring out the world of art and antiques into the story while weaving in various murders that happened over a number of years. The readers will find Detective Lucas Davenport investigating the Minnesota State Senator Burt Kline. The senator has been accused of having sex with a minor. Special note: the book contains an overly abundance of foul language which I don't care for. I felt the story held its own without the constant splattering of offensive language.
Overall the characters in the story were well developed and along the way Sandford dropped a sprinkling of humor which I always enjoy in a story. The story is a great beach read.
If you are craving a refreshing mystery novel that will give you lots of twists and turns that will draw you completely into the story I highly recommend The Monopoly Factor by Robert L. Saunders. Saunders is a fantastic writer and the closure was incredible. Beware! You may stay up till 2am (like myself) reading this super story. Don't miss this one. So long.

Prey Tell
Sanford must be running out of normal ideas. This one is way way too complicated, and also (but maybe it's me) I knew almost everything I needed to guess who was whom with 20 minutes. It is also far-fetched to the point of disbelief, although well and crisply written.
I'll just have to wait for the next "
prey
" to assuage my appetite.
