Changed my view on pet health forever

This is a wonderful pet health book and a great introduction to holistic pet care (or holistic medicine in general). My mother is a nurse, and I've always had pretty healthy eating habits and have taken care of myself. However for some reason it never occurred to me to apply that idea to my dog until I started hearing about feeding fresh food to dogs. I started researching about pet health since my dog had his tumor removed, and I wanted to keep him as healthy as possible in his old age. This book and its assertions about how to keep your pet healthy through diet and natural healing methods are unconventional, mind-blowing, and yet, so completely sensible that you wonder how people who love animals could have been duped to slowly kill their pets by feeding them waste materials of the food industry, suppressing their natural warning systems (i.e. illness/allergy symptoms), and poisoning by way of conventional medicine. How could we have ever believed that "table scraps" (i.e. real food) is bad for our pets? It makes you wonder about your own health, too. I now feed my dog home-cooked food, supplementing with human-grade kibble when I don't have time. He no longer smells bad just a week after being bathed!

UPDATE June 2007:
About six months after my dog's surgery to remove his tumors, I found two dark, raised moles growing in the same genital region where his removed tumor used to be. I was alarmed because these looked just like the old tumors. Instead of taking him to my regular vet (who'd just give him another surgery), I looked up one of the holistic veterinarians listed in this book (based in Santa Monica, CA). After reviewing the case, he recommended an ultrasound (to determine if the cancer has spread to organs), surgery to remove the tumors on the skin, and then an herbal treatment to keep it from coming back. Due to the cost, I chose to try only the herbal treatment and would consider the other options later.

A mere week later, I noticed that the largest mole on my dog's abdomen showed some redness around the edges and was not as raised as before. At 2 weeks, the mole turned almost all red (as opposed to a purplish-black color initially). Then the redness slowly dissipated until week 4, when it completely disappeared. Now it's a natural skin color and you can only tell by a small dot of loose skin that a mole used to be there. There was a small mole on his neck, too, that I can't find anymore because he has more hair there.

Sure, maybe the moles weren't that cancerous after all, I don't know for sure. What I do know is that they weren't normal -- they grew within 4 months or less. Also, my dog has some benign cysts on the skin that he's had since before the surgery, but the medicines didn't affect them at all. The vet said I can halve the dosage next month, though I don't know how long I'll need to keep it up after that. All in all, I am extremely grateful for the experience -- and it's all thanks to this book.

Blows the lid off Conventional Vet Practice!!

Last year I went through a cat with Cancer, another cat with Kidneys stones, another cat with a abcessed tooth and a dog a ear infection. After $3000 in vet bills and little help from conventional treatmeats, I wanted to give Holistic medicine a try. This book has opened me up to a new way thinking and been a life saver to my animals. The book is greatly detailed about natural feeding, supplements, dangers of vaccines and flea meds etc.. Also lots of info on Herbs and natural remedies. Useing the Herbs listed in the book my male cat has had no more stones in over 2 years and they are all thriving all natural foods, flax seed oil and supplements. I have also learned to go more natural with all household cleaners etc., keeping us all safer from toxic dangers we use everyday. Thank you Martin Goldstein for this excellent book, I wish you practiced in my area. I also recommend "Dr Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats" by Richard H. Pitcairn, both books have been very helpful to me..

Drips with compassion

This is a book that drips with compassion, page by page, chapter by chapter. If you own a pet or are thinking about getting one, this is not merely recommended. It is required reading in my opinion. Once in awhile, we come across an individual, who has risen above his peers and made quantam strides in a field, but yet has no ego about it. Such a person does so, I believe, because it is their goal to achieve the product, and not so much the reward of their labors. Dr. Goldstein is one of these rare individuals who has risen to greatness treating animals with the purpose of increasing their health and quality of life rather than merely treating them in methods that the veterinary industry, as a group, has evolved. His practice is holistic in the sense that he uses what works. And that does include some conventional veterinary methods. It's all about what's best for the pet.

In reading this book, you will encounter case histories of Dr. Goldstein's, what he did, what he learned. You discover how he became a holistic vet, having practiced conventionally for a number of years. He was interested in treating animals and improving their lives. Compassion.

Dr. Goldstein has a lot to say about diet. And it makes sense that this one point is such a vital element to an animal's life. The chapter titles says it all: "It All Starts with Food." I could never understand how vets prescribe a diet for cats with renal problems that is so low in protein when a cat's natural diet is diametrically opposite. While it makes sense to not stress the kidneys, removing protein is not necessarily the best approach. Especially when cancer is so prevalent and cancer thrives on carbohydrate diets.

And Dr. Goldstein introduces invaluable information about vaccines. The link between vaccines and ailments, including cancers, is now well-known among many vets that your vet today may well ask if your cat is indoor or outdoor to determine if Fluffy really needs all the vaccinnes. Compelling information is provided that our pets are grossly over-vaccinated to the point where the vaccines are introducing more problems than they are solving. Don't count on your local vet to know all of these details. As pet owners, it is really our responsibility to have the final say on what is put into our animal's body.

An entire chapter is devoted to cancer. This has become a disease that your pet may well develop if treated conventionally with vet-recommended diets and annual vaccinations. It is what Dr. Goldstein sees daily. His brother's pioneering work with cryosurgery is part of the regimen that Dr. Goldstein's clinic uses to this day to remove or kill tumors. It is far less costly without the nasty side-effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the more spiritual aspects of the book, which includes a chapter on the spiritual nature of animals and the death of a pet. Our friends don't live forever, unfortunately. This part of the book touched on something I experienced that I had previously believed was merely my imagination, yet it was something other pet owners experienced after the death of a pet. It made sense.

As I mentioned at the outset, this book just plain drips with compassion throughout. You can't help but feel it, see it and understand it.

The Nature of Animal Healing: The Definitive Holistic Medicine Guide to Caring for your Dog and Cat

If you can only afford one book to help guide you to a healthier dog & cat this is it. This is without a doubt the best book on the market for improving the health of your dog or cat through improving the food you put into their bodies and thus improving their health and their immune system. Just like people... you are what you eat and so it is with our pets.

Dr. Martin Goldstein has been treating animals by improving their food and with natural supplements for many years and has seen amazing results. After using his methods I saw results in just weeks with my pets. I believe his methods have saved the life of one of my pets who was ill with Cushings Disease.

This book has quickly become my Bible. I buy multiple copies and give them to friends. You will wish you had found this book much sooner!

Cat (and Dog) Natural Health Vet Book

I like this book. Dr. Goldstein writes not only informatively, but interestingly and with compassion, too, and includes examples from his practice. I bought his book as a reference but have read the entire thing, some parts more than once.

The chapter on vaccinations alone is worth the price. It is a real eye opener, a "must read".

We have 4 cats and no dogs, but even so I found the information on dogs helpful and interesting, too.
