great reality check!!

Larry really tells it real. Read this to get inspired to start taking care of your finances and stop fooling yourself.

A great "kick your butt" book!

For those of us who need a "kick in the butt" to get going on our financial future, this book is a great place to start. This book made me really think about how I've handled money over the years. I'm not maxed out on a bunch of credit cards, but it seems like I never have enough money to pay my bills each month. This book made me realize that there are places I could change my spending to have enough each month. I'm just getting started, but I believe this book will help me to move towards my goals. This isn't a book for those looking for expert investment advice or strategies. However, if you need to get started in managing your money wisely (and don't mind a straightforward approach), this is the book for you!

Might resonate with some readers

My only exposure to Larry Winget's work has been a library book of _It's Called Work for a Reason_ which had a tough-love tone I didn't much like. I've never seen his tv show. I almost didn't read this book but my mom gave me a copy. It's an eye-opener, with a good balance of tough talk and compassion. The most convincing part is that he (and most of the people he uses as examples) started out screwing up their financial lives very badly, and sometimes more than once, decide their situation sucks, and then resolve to focus, knuckle down, and set forth on a path to prosperity.

In my own situation, the book resonates in a very helpful way. I have no debt but I'm not much of a saver, and often find myself short for the things I want. I also lived with a bit of clutter and didn't enjoy my home. When my neighbor moved out across the hall and it took his family three solid weekends to clear out the floor to ceiling stacks of old magazines and paper, I began to clean. When an unexpected work shortage caused me to rethink my spending, I began by substituting my daily Starbucks with a French press coffee and cream. Then I declared 2008 to be my Year of No New Things (my exemption list includes replacement of things I use every day if they bust and there's no substitute, a $500 clothes budget, and a few lamps which I managed to get for free anyway). I admit to falling for the occasional $3 office supply (my weakness - salvation through organization), but over all, I am making a sport of shopping my own house, using or selling what I have already, and cooking at home. By the way, cooking at home is the number one way to improve your social life. Have people over, have a nice evening (dvd from the library, a nice pot roast and wine), and it's still cheaper than going out. My friends have been right there to help me decorate, take things I don't need, and swap things like books, magazines, and housewares they don't need. It's been great fun, and nearly free.

If you're really broke, you need to give this book a look. Get it from the library (request the book if they don't have it yet) or borrow it from a friend or, as in my case, receive a copy from my exasperated mom... (you have to go find your own mom, though.) Larry will still make the sale!
