Slightly entertaining.... just beware....

I got this book for my almost three year old to introduce him to something outside the simple boardbook genre... You can only ready Jamberry and the Eric Carle books so many times before your brains begins to turn to mush... Anyways, my son thinks the book is fun and requests to read it at least 4 times a week, which is a good sign.

I think most parents will think this book is fine, but beware! As stated by another reviewer, it was clearly written an another era. The drawings are a little old school--lacks the vibrancy of current books on the market. It also has some elements to it that may be disturbing to some....The things that Danny is seeing at the museum include, "Indians (in sterotypical gard--a feather topped headpiece and bare-chested), Eskimos (haven't really heard that term in awhile), Guns, and Swords. Everyone (except for the "Indian and Eskimo") are white. The zoo in the books looks a little barbaric, but I really didn't take much issue with it. We have the book on CD, so we listen to it and read along. If you can find an edition with the CD, it really animates the story and makes it 10x better.

So if you are are super socially conscious and are very particular about what images and ideas your child is exposed to, preview the book at your library. Other wise, its decent entertainment for a young one....

An oldie but goodie

I remember this book as a kid (in the 70's). I just read it to my two year old son and he absolutely loved it!

Meh

It's not as charming as all that, and definitely written in a different era - no non-white characters, zoo animals in cages, that sort of thing. There's nothing wrong with that - no sense judging it on our mores - but as it's not overly interesting either I can't sensibly give it more than three stars.

Blast from the past

I bought this book for my four year old because I had a copy of the book when I was a kid. Plus my child is also named Dannie and she loves Dinosaurs as well so that made purchasing it all the more desirable. This book arrived quickly in the mail too so I will definately purchase more books from the seller.

Excellent book for beginning readers...

This book is really great for beginning readers. My son is 6 years old & in 1st grade & it's perfect for his reading level. He can read about half the words or more, which is really good considering that this book is 64 pages. He really enjoys it. We break it up into 2 nights of reading so he doesn't get restless. The story itself is cute and the pictures aren't bad either. I would highly recommend this book.

Danny loves dinosaurs. When he sees one at the museun and says, "It would be nice to play with a dinosaur," a voice answers, "And I think it would be nice to play with you." So begins Dannys and the dinosaur's wonderful adventure together!

But a dinosaur is no ordinary playmate. Even the most everyday activities become extraordinary, like finding a big-enough place to hide a dinosaur in a game of hide-and-seek, and keeping him from knocking over houses with his long tail. But Danny can teach a old dinosaur new tricks. It's the most fun this dinosaur has had in a hundred million years!

Originally published as An I Can Read Book over 40 years ago, this classic story is perfect for reading together.

Danny's out on the town with a real live dinosaur. And whether they're eating ice cream or playing hide-and-seek, these two are having one hundred million years of fun--all in one day.

Outstanding Children's Books of 1958 (NYT)
