Entertaining thriller

This is the first James Rollins book I have read. It was an impulse purchase and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed reading this book. It's not going to win any literary book awards, this book is pure entertainment for the mind, simple as that. It's the type of book I categorize as "brain candy". Something fluffy, easy to read, and not too complicated, with fast pacing to keep you riveted to that seat and engrossed in the world Rollins has created.

While on a "shakedown cruise", the USS Polar Sentinel, a research submarine assigned to the Omega Drift Station, a U.S. research facility built atop the polar ice cap, comes upon a gigantic ice island in the Arctic Circle. This is no ordinary floating ice island, as within its core is a Russian research station, Grendel, thought lost decades before. They board the underground research station and find dozens of dead scientists and no clue what happened, not to mention something horrifying and disturbing within one of the laboratories. In addition to the mystery laboratory, the scientists and crew of the Polar Sentinel encounter another astonishing discovery within the Russian station that later proves to be very dangerous and quite fatal.

The naval personnel and scientists have no clue what they have inadvertently stumbled onto, but the U.S. and Russian government know what's at stake, and both governments quickly dispatch covert ops teams to "handle" the situation.

This story is told from a few different perspectives. From the personnel of the Omega Drift Station, to the Russian admiral sent to deal with the situation, and an Alaskan park warden and his ex-wife who unwittingly becomes involved. I won't say how the 3rd group plays into the story-line, but the real reason how they get involved was a surprising twist that wasn't revealed until the end and I didn't see coming at all.

Overall, a good thriller with a lot of action and suspense.

Most underrated Rollins book

This is certainly one of Rollins best books. I don't think it gets the proper amount of respect it deserves. It contains great adventure, some of his best action scenes, good characters that you cheer for, great science and intrigue, and of course x-files type monsters. Rollins has kind of gotten away from his monsters in recent Sigma Force novels, which is okay, but they are always fun. This is certainly Rollins' most explosive book...AWESOME!!

James Rollins Addict!

Good story line, like no other, I was not disappointed with Ice Hunt. He takes the unbelievable and twists them into a reality, very vivid I felt as if I could have been there. My only hope is that James Rollins can continue to crank out more books and quickly!

Earlier stuff the best.

I love all of Rollins' books but his earlier novels before he got into Singma Force is where it's at. Highly recommend this book for the action lover.

Carved into a moving island of ice twice the size of the United States, Ice Station Grendel has been abandoned for more than seventy years. The twisted brainchild of the finest minds of the former Soviet Union, it was designed to be inaccessible and virtually invisible. But an American undersea research vessel has inadvertently pulled too close?and something has been sighted moving inside the allegedly deserted facility, something whose survival defies every natural law. And now, as scientists, soldiers, intelligence operatives, and unsuspecting civilians are drawn into Grendel's lethal vortex, the most extreme measures possible will be undertaken to protect its dark mysteries?because the terrible truths locked behind submerged walls of ice and steel could end human life on Earth.
