Not The Best Movie Novelization Written

As a huge fan of "Legend Of Zorro," I decided to pick up this book, if only because often what was cut from the movie makes it within the novelizations. The book does mention, or bring up, a number of points not in the movie that, when watching the movie, crossed my mind (one of which being how did Alejandro and Elena make their fortune, given all that had happened in "The Mask Of Zorro"?).

Overall, however, the author's over-usage of flowery metaphor in an attempt to show the romantic and fierce love between Alejandro and Elena was actually distracting. As a reader of romance novels, I don't say that lightly. The cliched metaphors don't end there, and one feels they are reading nearly "purple prose" fan fiction, in many passages of the novelization, rather than adult male writing a serious novelization of a movie/movie script. While I want to read a novelization that is more "fleshed out" than what I may see at the theatres, I simply found myself wincing at the verbose descriptions and the odd way the author created "diaries" throughout the book to show different points of view of the characters. I found these unnecessary and a further distraction. I can only surmise that the novelization is intended for teenage girls, except that I found my copy in the section for film and theatre books/biographies.

Overall, the novelization is a good way to "fill in the blanks" for a true fan of the movie, but not a good way for someone who has yet to see the movie(s) to become acquainted with it. The saccharine nature of some of the writing can be hard to swallow.
