Good reading

If you love dogs, this book is so well worth the read. The driving part was a learning experience.

Great read

What a thoroughly enjoyable novel. Loved Enzo, Denny, Zoe and Eve. I'm not a dog owner... but a cat owner.Hardly matters, I love animals...and this book has just so many valuable lessons:"Hands are the windows to a man's soul". I would put the book down and pause to think about what I had just read...or wipe my eyes, or blow my nose, or laugh. Something for everyone! One of my favorites this summer.

The Perfect Novel

I would call this a perfect novel for the following reasons.
1. The unique choice of narrator (the dog) which, once you get over the gimmick, is handled with grace and aplomb and not at all off-putting
2. The language is delicious, without a word too many or too few. The author understates the action just enough that his words are each filled with poignancy and gravitas
3. The plot, which winds through several permutations, each unexpected but perfectly believable
4. The characters, all of whom are well-written and three-dimensional
5. The message, which is one of patience, balance, loyalty and unconditional love

I read this book in one sitting, unable to take a break once I started. There were several moments where it moved me to tears, and the last few chapters had me weeping openly. The experience was cathartic and immensely rewarding.... and that, I contend, is perfection.

The Art of Racing in the Rain

The Art of Racing in the Rain

If you had told me I would love a book about a racecar driver (and the story was being told by his dog), I would have said you were nuts! But is it so much more than that, the whole story is a metaphor for life and I couldn't put it down. This story is so artfully told that I have committed many passages to memory. There were some storylines that were tense; but again, so is life.

Buy the book, you will not be disappointed. And keep a pen for underlining and a box of Kleenex close by.

An extraordinary book

This book touches all the bases. It's emotionally moving, very funny, full of technical information about race driving (with lots of metaphorical applications of course), and told almost entirely from a most delightful dog's point of view. Zo, the dog, muses about his next return as a man, complete with thumbs and a tongue capable of speech. I found this to be one of the most enjoyable books I've read in the past couple of years.

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.

Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.

On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoë, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it.
