Adventures Beyond the Body: How to Experience Out-of-Body Travel

I first heard William Buhlman speak of OBEs on Kelly Howell's Theatre of the Mind podcast. I ordered this book immediately and devoured it quickly. If anyone reading this wants to know more about OBEs, I consider Buhlman a master and recommend this book. Also, I recommend listening to the above mentioned podcasts, one from July 2009, and the other a couple months later. Adventures Beyond the Body taught me what to expect while seeking OBEs, how to get there (techniques), and what to do once I got "out there" (important piece). Actually, Buhlman explains that OBEs are not really "out there," rather they are an inward movement into dimensions of non-physical reality that he believes exist within or are accessed from going within. Jesus Christ said: "The kingdom of God is within." I never quite understood that until recently. I am hooked now. I like Buhlman's recorded accounts from other OBE-ers. Those parts were fun and engaging reads and helped me with the fear factor.

One of the "bibles" of the New Age

Astral travel and OBE look like the new craze or the IN-thing of New Age folks (one can learn it through reading a book or learn it on-line, taking a few days' time to practice, and off-you-go!). Reading this book certainly has convinced me the reason WHY. William wrote with compassion, clarity, good sharing (private/personal experience/searching for spirituality); and with a easy-to-follow formula (like simple visualization before one goes to bed), one can have sweet OBE experience (when asleep) guided by one's own consciousness while other folks might be haunted by bad dreams dictated by one's unconscious. No doubt, William's simple technique works for many folks, easily making it one of the "bibles" of the New Age spirituality trend.

And true to customer-first business practice, William devoted many pages to explain his 20+ benefits of his version of OBE; such benefits include, among other things, spontaneous healing, increased spirituality, encountering a being of light, an angel or other non-physical resident (my comment: perhaps other astral travelers too), and increased zest of living etc. etc. (like a quick DIY shot to boost up one's confidence!). In short, great value for your money.

This practice is however different from Taoist/Buddhist (in particular Tibetan) practice where OBE (as a side-effect or one of the results) is fostered through meditation and sophisticated energy works (well, one doesn't need more energy than climbing to bed to do visualization). In these Eastern practice, the meditator, because of not being asleep, has to navigate himself carefully through the unconscious where the good & the bad (gods & devils) dwell; religious belief, specific instructions, and/or a specific cultural tradition would be essential to protect the psyche of the practitioner from being harmed by the devil. Carl Jung, when he examined these Eastern practices, had warned against westerners without that special cultural tradition (nor religious belief) hastily going into practicing these Eastern exercises. According to Jung, the first possible danger is self-induced psychosis, and the second is creating an over-dominant consciousness (feeling "invincible"!) The first danger doesn't seem to apply to William's practice and New Age OBE in general, Jung's second warning, however, is likely to be applicable.

Adventures Beyond the body:How to Experience Out-of-Body Travel

So far I've enjoyed the book. I find the technical science tedium, but supppose it serves its purpose and imagine many left brained persons would find it useful. I like reading about the author's experiences, which provide perspectives I had not considered. This is my first astral projection book, and believe that as for educating myself on the topic, this book is providing as much as I had hoped for, though its not so comprehensive that I won't look elsewhere for further informtaion.

THE best book on the subject of OBE, hands down

I actually had a spontaneous OBE many years ago, but it frightened me so much that I turned my back on the idea for at least 25 years. When I decided about five years ago that I might want to give it some serious thought and perhaps see if I could repeat the experience, the first thing I did was to begin reading everything I could find on the subject. Luckily, one of the first books I found was Adventures Beyond the Body because, although I read other books after that, this is the one I kept coming back to. I've read it twice now, just because I enjoyed it so much. It is so well-written and intelligent but, at the same time, very reader-friendly. It opened my mind to the unseen dimensions and workings of the universe, tieing in the concept of astral travel with traditional scientific knowledge. But, the best thing I can say about William's book is that it helped me achieve my first voluntary, self-induced OBE and then to continue to astral project with ease and with the confidence that I had the tools to face any fears or other problems/barriers I might encounter.

The book could not be any more comprehensive...he starts off by addressing the fears one may have about astral projection and dispelling them. Then he offers many different techniques for learning to astral project from which to choose based on one's own natural ability and mode of mind focus. For me, visualization was what worked. Then he walks one through the projection process from start to finish and address every possible sensation one might encounter in the process. I have yet to encounter a sensation or situation out of body for which he does not offer an explanation and a solution...that WORKS.

As a training manual...a reference book...a nonphysical-science book, it is indispensible. When asked to recommend ONE book, out of the dozens I have read on the subject of OBE/AP, I unhesitatingly recommend William Buhlman's Adventures Beyond the Body. It has opened a world to me that was always around me, but of which I was unaware until William gave me the ticket to travel. My spiritual life soars. Thank you, William!
