Wonderful story for preschoolers

This is a classic story for young children, that I have known for many years. The only thing I take issue with (now that we are so environmentally aware) is the burning of leaves, today we would recycle them for leaf mulch!

I recommend this book for any three, four and five year old children. The illustrations are bold and vivid, and the text makes for a great discussion of how we need to appreciate and preserve our natural treasures, TREES!

this book is nice...but not great

This is a fine book, not extra special, but good and son enjoyed it very much. The words are simple - a sentence on every other page for the most part. The illustrations are clear and realistic, not cartoon or silly or washed out. Very realistic. Each page depicts a real situation for trees. A little plain in text and ideas but maybe that is just the old fashionedness since it was originally published in the 1950s. Also note: text does not rhyme or have a specific rhythem. One thing that I espeically appreciated about it was that it made one appreciate trees, encouraged one to take care of them and even to plant trees but did not sentimentalize trees or become a tree hugger type book. No "global warming" stuff. Just appreciation for trees and all the ways we need, enjoy and use them. "A tree is nice" is a nice book, enjoyed by all. Good price too! :)

A Tree Is Nice, Is Nice

This is a nice book.

It starts out, "Trees are very nice. They fill up the sky".

The picture shows a forest and in the lower corner a boy, lying on the ground, looking up. From a kid's vantage point, trees really do fill up the sky.

It continues, "Even if you have just one tree, it is nice too. A tree is nice because it has leaves. The leaves whisper in the breeze all summer long".

The picture shows a farm, with one tree in a field, and a horse standing under it in the shade...

And so, the beneficial characteristics of trees are touched on, lightly and one by one.

A vintage book, worthy of the Caldecottt Medal it won in 1957.

Not the best book about trees

This book seems very old-fashioned. The pages alternate on color and black & white. Also, it would be better if it offered some scientific reason for why trees are nice along with the whimsical, children-playing reasons.

trees ARE nice

What a joyful book. A wonderful paeon to trees and the wonder they can inspire in kids, adults, the reader. A true arborial appreciation, delightfully rendered artistically by Marc Simont--I can see why this book won the Caldecott. It has aged well, and it carries an important message even today.

Trees are beautiful. They fill up the sky. If you have a tree, you can climb up its trunk, roll in its leaves, or hang a swing from one of its limbs. Cows and babies can nap in the shade of a tree. Birds can make nests in the branches. A tree is good to have around. A tree is nice.
