Best since 1835

This is the best socio/political book I have read in 40 years since my reading of Alexis de Tocqueville's "Democracracy in America" publised 173 years ago. Al Gore found his calling. Being president would have been a let down for his vast talents.

Inspiring, Empowering, and Honest

One only needs to have lived for the past 8 years to know that Bush has manipulated the truth to push a political agenda powered by fear, power, and a disregard for the intelligence of the average person. Pointing out this fact is not the contribution of Gore's book. What makes Gore's book absolutely critical is that it challenges the way we all live, work, and relate to the world. It shows how each and every one of us makes judgments based on habitual, unquestioned emotional conclusions and then impose them on everyone else. It describes how a politically corrupt group of people (in this case it happens to be the Bush administration) can utilize the medium of television to capitalize on the fears of the average American and the vulnerable state of our culture as a whole. It shows how we Americans can no longer tolerate the work of sorting out the truth, but instead throw out the most available emotional talking-points and then defend our lazy thinking by accusing anyone that challenges us with reason of being morally corrupt. This book is a wake up call. Only you can choose to do that. We have two choices: 1) wake up and participate in rational & respectful discourse and analysis of the facts, or 2) assert that we are RIGHT and face the consequences of our blind faith to our own position, possibly taking our children down with us. I choose to wake up. I hope everyone will read this book and question the quality of their own thinking so that we can, as a nation, responsibly address the many critical issues threatening the health and vitality of our world. That might take reading, analysis of the facts, and a bit of willingness to tolerate the discomfort of hearing someone else's point of view. Thanks, Mr. Gore for the hope and inspiration.

A Brilliant Analysis and Call to Action

In contrasting the intent of the Founding Fathers and the great leaders of the past with the ideologies that guide the policies of today, Gore brings to light what the America's terror in the early twenty-first century has cost its people: expression, liberty, and other "inalienable" rights. In examining the tragic state of our nation's politics, Gore suggests ways that the citizenry can protect itself from falling victim to schemes of fear, and how we, as common citizens, can act to promote reason in our government. This novel serves as a rare analysis that is thought provoking, poignant, and motivating to the point of inciting action about the horrendous state of our nation's government. Informative, mind-opening, and insightful, The Assault on Reason serves as a wake up call for Americans, and as a vision of how we can shape the future.

History

Al Gore is clearly the man who should have been president of the United States. This is a man our country can be proud of. The book summarizes the approach of the Republican Party and, in particular, the Bush Administration to controlling the country's recent agenda. It is nothing short of amazing how much damage has been done in so short a period of time. We all remember that Dwight David Eisenhower warned against the "military-industrial complex." What I hadn't realized was that the founders of the United States and every decent president we've ever had have warned against the potentially poisonous combination of democracy and capitalism. This is worth reading for a sense of history and a bit of hope for the future.

A #1 New York Times bestseller: A visionary analysis of the degradation of our public sphere and its consequences for our democracy

Nobel Peace Prize winner, bestselling author, activist, and political icon, Al Gore has become one of the most respected and influential public intellectuals in America today. The Assault on Reason takes an unprecedented look at how faith in the power of reason?the idea that citizens can govern themselves through rational debate?is now under assault. The marketplace of ideas, once open to everyone through the printed word, has been corrupted by the politics of fear, secrecy, cronyism, and blind faith. By leading us to an understanding of what we can do to restore the rule of reason, Gore has written a farsighted and powerful manifesto for clear thinking.
