Typical Cat and Mouse, Along With a Disappearing Act
Thomas Perry has been around for quite some time. So when the opportunity present itself to read him, I jumped all over it. "
Silence
" is the name of this cat and mouse thriller. Hidden identity is the name of the game, with a slight twist to give it some flavor. Thomas Perry writes well, sometimes leaving the reader guessing, sometimes making it quite obvious. But ultimately he hooks his reader within the first paragraph.
This story begins after a hard day's night, and trouble when you get home. Just ask Wendy Harper. And as a result of this, she has disappeared, and her location is unknown. And as a result of her being so well unknown, somebody might take the fall for her disappearance. But there is one man who might be able to track her down, and that's the man who taught her what she knows today. His name is Jack Till, and he's in a race with Paul and Sylvie Turner, trained assassins who can dance, to find Wendy Harper first. Get an innocent man off the hook, and get on with life. Sounds simple, right?
Thomas Perry makes it sound pretty easy. But there is humanity woven within each page, so even with the killers nipping at the heels, you sometimes feel sorry for them! And the story is told with guts, as well as told in masterful fashion. And even though the end is to die for, you can't help but feel like a punk if you walk away satisfied. That's how I felt in the end. But I also felt like I'd gotten my money's worth. And that's saying a great deal for a lot of supposed "BESTSELLING AUTHORS" these days. Thomas Perry has earned his check!

A diverting detour for mystery readers
If I hadn't already read Thomas Perry's "Butcher's Boy" in the 80's (and loved it!), I wouldn't have been so prepared for the spastic silliness of this
book
, intertwined with lots of really nasty, violent people. In other hands, the juxtaposition of strange and comical characters with murder drama is a disaster (I'm thinking of Martha Grimes). In
Silence
, we have Wendy Harper, who is on the run from a shadowy bad guy who clearly wants her dead. So, with the help of nicely written retired-policeman-turned-PI Jack Till, she disappears. In order to fully protect her, he ensures that even he doesn't know where to find her. But six years later, Eric, her former partner in life and business, is charged with her murder and Jack must try to find her. Of course, Eric has been framed and the ultimate goal is to smoke Wendy out of hiding. And waiting for her is the wackiest pair of tango-dancing assassins you could ever imagine. We need a new word because narcissism doesn't even begin to describe these two.
And so we start off on a cross-country chase with the bad people aided and abetted by the rental car companies' vehicle tracking devices! The body count in any Thomas Perry book is unreal and the close calls mount up like chain reactions but the characters make up for the story flaws and serial coincidences.
This is not my usual fare but it is a short book, quick read, diverting detour!

Nobody Writes 'em Better
Thomas Perry is a master of this kind of suspense novel. From his first Jane Whitefield novel to this latest triumph of suspense and characterization, he has no peers when it comes to writing
books about
people who need new identities and the crises that follow when their new lives are upended and the past comes calling to get retribution. The action is the star in this book, and the villains are the scene-stealers. You'll find yourself ripping through pages to get to the next scene, and the ending, though ultimately a bit muddled, is a good one.
Pick this one up. You'll be glad you did.

Stop Analyzing and Enjoy!
One of the best suspense novels ever. Sit back and enjoy. I challenge you to put this
book down
. One terrific read. Practically read it in one sitting. My first Thomas Perry novel and a winner it certainly is.
"Sound of Silence"
SILENCE
by Thomas Perry drives home the penalty of hiding behind a veil of silence and keeps readers turning the pages. Wendy Harper is aided by newly retired homicide detective, Jack Till to disappear into a new life after a friend dies and she is badly beaten.
The killer must find her and close the
books before
her knowledge can surface. Using the bat and torn blouse from her attack, he draws her from hiding. Innocents die to protect Wendy.
Jack struggles to both protect Wendy and prove to an antagonistic DA the innocence of Wendy's former partner and lover who had been arrested for her murder.
A thriller/romance, SILENCE doesn't allow the reader time to breathe.

Six years ago, Jack Till helped Wendy Harper disappear. But now her ex-boyfriend and former business partner, Eric Fuller, is being framed for her presumed murder in an effort to smoke her out, and Till must find her before tango-dancing assassins Paul and Sylvie Turner do.
The Turners are merely hired to do a job, though, and prefer to remain anonymous. When they find that a middleman has let the true employer know their identities, finishing the job is no longer enough. Their fee just went up.
Full of masterful plotting and unnerving psychological insight,
Silence
is a mesmerizing thrill ride.
