Tom Cruise and the Church of Scientology

Andrew Morton is an excellent biographer although if I were famous I would not be happy to hear he was about to write a biography, most especially an unauthorized one, about me.

However, as a consumer of Hollywood Hype and Glamour I could not resist this title as there is nothing like good gossip and "The Real Story" they do not want you to know.

I was surprised at first and a bit baffled when Mr. Morton went on a diatribe about the history of the Church of Scientology in the midst of the life of the title subject. However, though the facts where fascinating and presented in a factual, and believable presentation, it threw me a bit that Mr. Morton would spend so much time writing about the 'dirt' of this religious organization. However, it seemed to me as if he has something against the church and wrote about Mr. Cruise solely because of his very intense and perhaps unconventional involvement and control of this large Organization.

I am still awed, however that the details of Mr. Cruise's personal life and aptly shocked at his behavior. This was a side of MR. Cruise I would never have known and I commend Mr. Morton for having the courage to write about it. Surely, if his facts are true, Andrew Morton faces peril and potential ruin from this very influential group of individuals who would wish to act on the defense of his subject.

As a book, I enjoyed it immensely and as with any work of non-fiction, I will take the information with a grain of salt. However I will say that my impression of Tom Cruise in forever changed.

scientology is terrifying

I lived in LA where my friends explained what they knew about scientology and it's weird cult activities to me. The creepy scientology buildings were scattered all over LA. Everyone i knew laughed at the so-called religion. but it is clear that they have the upper hand in los angeles where so many celebs follow the ridiculousness of L Ron Hubbard. You can google lists of famous actor scientologists.. Tom isn't the only one. Even cool kids like Jason Lee and Giovanni Ribisi believe in "thetans" and go through the "purification rundown." They are everywhere in LA, disguised as cool boutique owners, young actors..etc. Yes this book goes into detail explaining the cult, but it does a great job at explaining the life of Tom Cruise, and I hope everyone knows how scary he is and to boycott his films. Hopefully Katie Holmes won't face losing her kids like Nicole Kidman did. Definitely read this book, everything the author says about the cult is true. They are totalitarian and want to take over the world. But as the south park writers stated after the scientology episode was banned, the cult has won this battle, but not the million year war!

Scientology Expose and a little Tom Cruise

I was hoping for more of the intimate details about Tom Cruise's later life and less about the evils of Scientology, but Andrew Morton presents a pretty even-handed work concerning both. If you're a Tom Cruise fan or even if you're not, I think you'll find this very insightful regarding pehaps the whys of TC. I'm not a Scientologist, but have known friends who used to be, and it's a scary beast best to be avoided at all costs, therefore I don't fault Morton for pointing this out. I'm afraid Cruise has been used and abused by these guys and he's the only one who doesn't "get" that. The one I really feel for is Katie Holmes, because she's way over her head in this stickie situation. Even if she could escape, there'd be no where to run, i.e., ever get serious acting jobs if she incurs the wrath of the Cruise machine. Sad.

Really interesting

This book was awesome. As a normal person, I didn't know much about Tom Cruise, just the general stuff. It helped me understand how Tom became what he is now, how he's been brainwashed and is now a perfect product of the Scientology church.

I really don't think that the author is trying to turn Tom down, he is just bringing some explanations on what happened in Tom's life. This book is really like a documentary, not really trying to give an opinion saying "Tom Cruise is bad" but more observing how things go around the actor.

I just hope now the Katie is going to succeed to go out of the church.

1992: Andrew Morton showed a Princess in a light we had never seen before--Diana: Her True Story became a #1 New York Times bestseller.

1999: Andrew Morton revealed the young woman behind the blue dress--Monica?s Story was a #1 New York Times bestseller.

January 15, 2008: Andrew Morton uncovers the true story of the biggest celebrity of our age.

Everyone knows Tom Cruise---or at least what he wants us to know. We know that he overcame a difficult childhood to star in astonishing array of blockbusters: Top Gun, Rain Man, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Interview with the Vampire, Jerry Maguire, three Mission: Impossible movies, War of the Worlds, and more. We know he has taken artistic chances, too, and as a result has earned three Academy Award nominations and three Golden Globes, along with the respect of acting legends like Paul Newman and Dustin Hoffman.
After that, the picture becomes a little less clear. We know that Tom is a Scientologist, but not necessarily what that means in his life. We know that, despite persistent rumors about his sexuality, he has been married to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes. But it was not until the spring of 2005, when he jumped on Oprah?s couch to proclaim his love for Katie and denounced Brooke Shields for turning to the ?Nazi science? of psychiatry, that we began to realize how much we didn?t know about the charming, hardworking star.
For two years, award-winning biographer Andrew Morton has been tirelessly seeking out everyone from former teachers and girlfriends to Scientology insiders to friends who have watched a once-bullied, ?nothing special? outsider transform himself into an icon Forbes has called the most powerful celebrity in the world  Here, with never-seen photos and never-heard revelations, is a riveting, sometimes shocking portrait of the real Tom Cruise---his work, his love life, his marriages, his religion---from a master at uncovering the true story behind the public face of celebrity.
