Good, but slightly confusing.

Norton has it's merits. He is a man a bit outside the standars for a protagonist. Somewhat like Zane, he is poor and lacks a love interest and friends. That changes in the course of the novel, on which he finds a true love interest.

After certain spoilerific events, he finds himself to be the Incarnation of Time, which job seems to be helping Fate, but it is never truly discussed or explained, which bugs me.

Chronos (Norton, after having been given the Office) finds that even though he is immune to a paradox to a certain extent he cannot go back and change his own past. No one can.

This book contains some scenes which should be considered as 'out-of-place' and generic, but that is because they are meant to be exactly that, a demonic satire of a generic plot of events that happens in oh so many books. It is obvious to the point where he uses the generic, old, sci-fi-created term 'BEM' (Bug-eyed-monster, look it up on wikipedia, it is an old term for generic alien creatures) to describe an Alien. There is also a satire of a fantasy frame, in which there is a Damsel in Distress, an Elf, an Evil Witch, and an Alicorn (flying unicorn), sound familiar? Of course! It is indeed a satire, that only Piers Anthony could introduce so subtly.

The story besides the entertaining satires is captivating and dynamic. Oh, and there is also that cute little demon answering each one of Norton's questions (which later appears on the series ;) ).

In the end, it's a good book, a little confusing with the timelines issues but it is good as long as you can keep up!

Confusing, but Excelent

Yes this book is confusing, the best way to read it is either to sit down and read it all in one straight go, or to just read it twice, Would not read this book if you do not consider yourself to be an avid reader because you will be struggling to keep up. Also I would suggest before going on to Amazon and posting a review you make the effort to read all the other books in the series, becaue only after you do will it become apparent how important the so called "filler" is to the plot line of the series. You would do well to remember that you are reading a series, and this series is not a series of stories, it is one long very convoluted story and you will not be at the end of the story untill you've read the entire series. If you cannot keep up and stay committed to the story you might as well pick up something by Ann Rice and call it a night.

Not Free SF Reader

Surrogate ghost parent stint fails, becomes Lord of Time instead.

This Incarnation gets to do the Merlin thing, and live backwards in time. Being in charge of that he can go forward if he wants to, though.

He hooks up with one of the Fates, and also has Satan try and trick him, one of these stunts includes trying to convince him to stop the event that makes the guy in the first book Thanatos.

great book

this book is more of a connector from the first to the third. i found it hard to read at first but then i couldn't put it down. worth the buy if you are going to read the set.

When life seemed pointless to Norton, he accepted the position as the Incarnation of Time, even though it meant living backward from present to past. The other seemingly all-powerful incantations of Immortality--Death, Fate, War, and Nature--made him welcome. Even Satan greeted him with gifts. But he soon discovered that the gifts were cunning traps and he had become enmeshed in a complex scheme of the Evil One to destroy all that was good....
