Follow the river

I read this book in the early eighties after my mom and brother and two sisters and was amazed by it and remembered it after all those years and wanted my boyfriend to read it. Although I didn't recall the exact name I googled "survival and river" and after about 800 titles I recognized it and we read it again and he has passed it on to many of his friends. Two of mine have devoured it. It's fascinating, you can't put it down.

Incredible true story by a gifted storyteller

Not since Last of the Mohicans and James Fenimore Cooper has there been a writer on early American history as gifted as James Alexander Thom. This is the true ordeal of Mary Ingles, kidnapped by the Shawnee in 1755 and who walked 1000 miles over 6 weeks to return to her husband in present day W. Virginia. The colorful language and authentic feel of this novel makes you feel like you are right there, witnessing everything. The author's respect for Mary Ingles is apparent in his vision and writing style. There are graphic parts but please understand the context - it's not a horror novel. The gory parts are how life really was at that time. A brilliant work and one not to miss if you are a history buff.

Great, great book!

I'd read this book once before, a long time ago, and it blew me away then. I know that the author took some literary license, but to know that Mary Ingles went through nearly the same ordeal is incredible to imagine. It's amazing what mankind can endure and still survive to regain their lives.

Very hard to finish but I couldn't put it down

This is a very painful book to read. Several times I put it down with the intention of not picking up again as it was too terrible. However, after I finished it then I missed the extremely rough journey which she made and reading her thoughts as she went along. She was an amazing woman and very inspirational.
