My Favorite Author Rhyannon Byrd

Rhyannon Byrd consistently creates men who are absolutely to-die-for and Mason Dillinger is no exception. His intense passion for Torrance is toe-curling. The gruff way he expresses his longing for her will pull at your heartstrings. Byrd's style is so sensuous it's breathtaking, her characters so real you'll never want to leave the wonderful world she creates in Last Wolf Standing.

A word of warning. Order your copy of Last Wolf Hunting and Last Wolf Watching now, before they're sold out.

First in a "pack" of light but steamy shifter romances.

Talk about first impressions. Werewolf Mason sniffs out his mate, comes up blank on how to approach her, freaks out as she starts to pass him by, so he trips her -- how suave, you gotta love it. Apologies and flirting come next and it seems like his ploy's going to work until Mase's buddy rats him out and the mate-to-be Torrance flees her encounter with the gorgeous crazy guy. But the intense pull between mates and an evil werewolf with a score to settle who sees Torry as Mase's achille's heel and makes plans for her torturous demise, mean that if Torry wants to live she is going to have to take her chances with the yummy insane guy. As Mase and Torry begin to explore the undeniably intense attraction between them, it is clear that they both have their issues-- Mase wants to avoid love having seen the damage that its loss can cause first hand and Torry will settle for nothing less.

Last Wolf Standing is the first book in Byrd's new series for Nocturne. Byrd gives us a group of hunky werewolf Bloodrunners that are half bloods and who, in order to earn their place in the pack, must hunt down rogue werewolves that have gone to the dark-side addicted to killing and eating humans. All these hotter than hot Bloodrunners have their emotional issues from being "used" as guard dogs for the pack while being treated like scum for their mixed heritage and their human blood. The basis for the series is pretty simple and somewhat familiar if you substitute "blood lust' for 'meat lust', 'rogue vampire' for 'rogue werewolf' and hunky 'Bloodrunners' for sexy 'Vampire hunters' or 'Guardians', 'Breeds' or 'Watchers' you've just read the synopsis for at least five current popular vampire paranormal romance series. Add to that the fact that the mate bond is sealed by a bite and drinking blood and it looks an awful lot like the editor said, 'great idea but there's too many vamp stories out there right now, how about shifters instead?' But still I'm a sucker for sexy shifters, so I liked this and while there was nothing deep and complicated here plotwise the character interaction between Mase and Torry and between Mase and his fellow Bloodrunners was good enough that I'll be reading the rest.

If you like these light and sexy shifter romances, and have already read Scions: Resurrection (Silhouette Nocturne) by Michelle Read earlier this year, Karen Whiddon has a similar series you might want to check out at the used book store while you are waiting for the next Bloodrunners. A few of the older ones are Silhouettes but the newer ones are published under the Nocturne banner.

Whiddon's Pack:
One Eye Open (The Pack, No.1) (Sihouette Intimate Moments, No. 1301)
The Pack: One Eye Closed (Book 2) (Silhouette Intimate Moments No. 1365)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and didn't want to put it down

This was my first Silhouette Nocturne...which is odd, because I really enjoy paranormal romance. I've been meaning to read one (or more!), but nearly every time I've gone to buy one, it's the middle book of a series and I refuse to read series out of order. Call it a quirk. A couple weeks back, I saw this one, and lo and behold--it was BOOK ONE!

I bought it faster than you can say "Bob's your uncle" and dove right in. I tend to prefer the more light-hearted paranormals, and have heard Nocturne can be a bit dark, so I wasn't sure what to expect. To my utter enjoyment, this book starts with our hero sensing (and scenting) his mate in a crowded cafe. He doesn't know who she is or what she looks like, just that she's there somewhere. Finally...

Time seemed to stand still as she walked toward him, his lungs burning while the top of his head felt about ready to come off. Within seconds she was in front of him, without even having glanced in his direction. With an utterly foreign sense of desperation, he did something that he'd never, in all his thirty-three years, thought he would do.

He tripped her.

So, though this book is certainly no comedy, it has several moments that made me smile. Mason and his partner, along with other half-breed werewolves, called Blood Runners, are hunting a rouge werewolf. That's their job. In order to "earn" their way into the pack of full-bloods, they have to rack up so many kills. However, this rouge wolf is different: he can fully change in daylight, mask his scent...and he's targeted our heroine, Torrance.

Mason doesn't want to fall in love. He's seen how it destroyed his brother, and how his parents literally live for one another, so he spends most of the book fighting his emotional feelings for Torry. He's just fine with "mating" with her, but don't let those pesky emotions get involved.

Torry, on the other hand, is a dreamer. She believes in, and fully expects to find, someone to love, who will love her right back, and she's not willing to settle for less. She's both soft and stubborn and I like that she's determined to save her own skin, won't take any guff from Mason, and yet she has such great compassion for people. Torry is truly a heroine to admire.

And the tension. Wow. Seriously... these two are driven to mate, yet fight it every step of the way. The author uses every one of their senses to show the depth of attraction and it twisted my gut: when will they give in to this passion and emotion that is tying them both into knots?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and didn't want to put it down. I read it as quickly as I've read anything lately. It's suspenseful, funny, full of interesting secondary characters, has a solid plot and is well written. I've already run to the store and grabbed the sequel to this book.

Rhyannon Byrd has a wonderful writing style. She's a new-to-me author, but not anymore. I have every intention of finding her backlist and devouring it as well.

If you enjoy a good, hot paranormal chuck full of alpha-wolves, and an intriguing plot, I highly suggest you pick up this book. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

pleasant surprise

I'm not a fan of series publications, nor this author. Not even sure why I bought it, but now I'm glad I did. This is the best series type book I have read in years, and to date my favorite read from Ms. Byrd.

Well done, a fun read.

awesome series!

I'm fairly new to paranormal romance but this trilogy(and I hear more books will be added to it next year making it a series)is awesome romance with an ongoing mystery throughout the books. This is my favorite couple of the 3. Spunky heroine and very alpha hero. There's not a lot of description on the shifting as some books do but a lot of talks about the fangs and claws wanting to come out. In this one(as well as all) the couple deal with individual problems they have to resolve. The hero is afraid to do a blood bond because it's very intense and he's afraid he'll end up destroyed if the woman leaves or dies. The woman, of course, is afraid of loving and not being loved back by him forever and ever. Overall a great story and I read all 3 back to back within a few days!
