Sideways fun for low level teenagers

I am a teacher of 7th to 11th graders who preform below the "standard" grade level expectations. They find these books comical, and I find them educational. They laugh at appropriate jokes and understand the allusions. Sachar not only uses allusions but alliterations, simile, metaphor, and a plethora of other literary devices that are easy enough for students to hear and read. I would normally reccommend these books for a fourth or fifth grade classroom for the humor and literature skills offered.

Wayside School stories

I recently purchased the boxed set of Wayside School stories for my 8 year old daughter. She is so thrilled with them that she has already read 2 of them and has begun the third one. We were having difficulty finding books she was interested in. Her 3rd grade teacher pointed us in the direction of the Wayside School stories. The stories are crazy and she can't wait to read outloud what is going on in the books. Her favorite part of the books is that there is no 19th story in the school! Not exactly my choice of reading material, but if you have an 8 year old who you want to get reading.... try these books!

Wayside School boxed set

I remember these books from when I was in elementry school. I loved them then, and can still remember the wacky stories. I loved them so much in fact that I wanted my own son to read, and enjoy them as much as I did.

A Crazy Mixed-up School.

There'd been a terrible mistake. Wayside School was supposed to be built with thirty classrooms one on top of the other...thirty stories tall! (The builder said he was very sorry.)

That may be why all kinds of funny things happen at Wayside SChool...especially on the thirteenth floor. You'll meet Mrs. Gorf, the meanest teacher of all, terrible Todd, who always gets sent home early, and John who can read only upside down--along with all the other kids in the crazy mix-up school that came out sideways. But you'll never guess the truth about Sammy, the new kid...or what's in store for Wayside School on Halloween!
