Good Children's Book

I liked this book. Way fast read for adults, but a good book with a nice simple message. Not really overly preachy about the "green" issues, and I think it's great that with our country's refound focus on the environment we can start sharing that message with kids again.

Great book!!

This book was excellent. I had never heard of it until I saw the movie with the same title. It is very colorful and fund to read with my daughter who is 8.

Better than the movie!

Great read! My child just poured through this book before the movie was even out. Loved the book so much more than the movie!

Great preteen reading.

Abigail is eleven years old and her story is full of mystery, fun and warmth. Preteen girls can experience island adventures vicariously through Abigail's story...this is the kind of book that will be read and read again.

For a much younger audience than the movie

This slim book, while nice in its own way, won't entertain fans of the movie for long. The squiggly line cartoons, the straightforward prose, remind me of the "Henry and Mudge" books, for a slightly older reader. To say that the book was plumped to make the movie is an understatement --- most of the adventure and suspense of the movie (along with most of the characterization and at least two characters) are not present in the book.

On its own, this is a very nice children's book. The Amazon description that it will appeal to children from ages 9 - 12 is completely off, though. I can't imagine that a reader over the age of 9 would find this terribly entertaining. If you haven't seen the movie, read the book first and enjoy it for itself. If you've already seen the movie, skip this book and go straight to Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" (for fantasy) or Carl Hiaasen's "Hoot" (for boys' adventure) or Scott O'Dell's "Island of the Blue Dolphins" (for girls' adventure). "Nim's Island" is more appropriate for readers from ages 7 - 9.

A girl. An iguana. An island. And e-mail. Meet Nim?a modern-day Robinson Crusoe! She can chop down bananas with a machete, climb tall palm trees, and start a fire with a piece of glass. So she?s not afraid when her scientist dad sails off to study plankton for three days, leaving her alone on their island. Besides, it?s not as if no one?s looking after her?she?s got a sea lion to mother her and an iguana for comic relief. She also has an interesting new e-mail pal. But when her father?s cell-phone calls stop coming and disaster seems near, Nim has to be stronger and braver than she?s ever been before.

And she?ll need all her friends to help her.

From the Hardcover edition.
