SCUBA newbie rates this one highly

I checked out several books targeting beginners. This looks like a keeper. This book is the only one sanctioned by the YMCA for its classes.

Whether in the balmy waters of a tropical coral reef or the icy cold of the North Sea, scuba diving is a magical way to explore the world beneath the waves. The only YMCA/Scuba-sanctioned guide, "Scuba Diving" includes all the information needed to start this exciting sport. It reviews the standard in all certification courses, with chapters on gear, diving planning, safety and first aid, the science of diving, diving techniques, the underwater environment, and using dive tables and computers. It also introduces divers to skills such as underwater photography, navigation, wreck diving, night diving and cold-water diving.
