Pretty good but not her best work...
I liked the characters, especially Ma Bee and Duncan. Ma Bee understands Duncan like no other - the only mother figure he'd ever known. Duncan is a take charge kind of man, one who does what he wants when he wants, and pursues Phoebe like a pitbull - jaw locked and refusing to let go. Phoebe needed him to balance her, and I'm glad they found each other. And Carly, Phoebe's 7-year-old daughter - very much like my own 7-year-old daughter. The only difference is my daughter likes numbers, LOL!
I liked the plot, even if there were loose ends. It's not very often when you have a hostage negotiator as the main character. I liked how it all played out. I'd have liked to see Duncan settly into Phoebe's house, them getting married, more about Phoebe's mother as well. And her trademark is all over this book - all the descriptions she gives buildings, gardens, etc..., they suck you into the story. You're seeing the building like you're standing in front of it. You smell the flowers in the garden. And it was pure delight how the very flower that Duncan first gave Phoebe is my absolute fave flower.
However, the climax of the story happens in the last chapter - something I don't ever remember NR doing before; where the climax and closure of the story happens in the last chapter - about 10 pages. Lots of dialogue, lots of action and suspense that gives it the perfect height of the story, the tension everyone feels in the situation. But all crammed into the last few pages of the last chapter? Come on! I'd have liked to have seen them settle, maybe a little more something from Arnie.
I really enjoyed how the characters came together I found that a lot of the scenes between the characters were so much like my family; ie: for instance, the banter between Duncan and his best friend's wife, Louise. They're banter is very close to the banter my husband has with my best friend - and I got a really good kick out of that! The family closeness - how they treat each other - is very much like my own family, and I like it so much when NR makes me feel like I'm part of the characters' families.
But the ending... that's the only reason why this doesn't get my usual NR 5-star rating.

WOW!!!
Anyone who associates Nora Roberts with simplistic Harlequin-style romances needs to read this book, which really showcases her true talent! I loved the complex character development, the twist and turns of the plot, the detective work, etc. Despite all the violence, which turned me off a bit, this was an enthralling story! It reminded me a bit of another book of hers called Blue Smoke. Different plot and details, but the same level of intensity and many of the same intricasies.

Similar to Blue Smoke
I like Nora Roberts a lot, she's one of my favorite authors. She understands and knows how to write about family dynamics. I enjoyed the book, but found it pretty similar to Blue Smoke, which I enjoyed, as well. This one is not a keeper for me, unlike most of her other books.

Not a Keeper
Not awful but not particularly good either.
I won't review the plot as it's already been done. However, the plot is the biggest problem I have because it was weak at best, nonexistent at worst. Most of the book was about Ben, Phoebe and her family with some hostage rescue taking place. It was towards the end that it came out she was being stalked by a killer, not who had harassed her off and on throughout the book. Also, all the people being in the same place, and not knowing each other, at the end of book was totally unbelievable.
Duncan was too good to be true. Rich, handsome, athletic, smart honest, brave, etc. And loving Phoebe's dysfunctional family (hers tops mine in the dysfunctional which is hard to believe) and wanting to take on their problems from the beginning isn't very realistic.

High Noon
Phoebe MacNamara is a a hostage negotiator for the police department in Savannah. While she works to help a young bartender who is determined to end his life, she meets his former boss Duncan Swift. As they work together to save a life, sparks fly between Phoebe and Duncan. Duncan is living the dream many would envy. He is very wealthy, but Duncan didn't inherit it or earn it, he actually won the lottery.
As Duncan pursues Phoebe, he learns the reasons she doesn't want to get involved with anyone. She has an ex-husband that has dropped out of her daughter's life, and a mother that is home bound by choice. As Duncan invades Phoebe's life, she learns he really is fond of both her mother and daughter.
When she is targeted and terrorized, Phoebe must solve the mystery behind it before her family or Duncan are lost to her.
What a good read! The characters are well written, and the story is wonderful. I haven't read many stories about hostage negotiators, and I learned a lot. It was a little more violent than I am used to, but it was important to the story.

Police Lieutenant Phoebe MacNamara found her calling at an early age when an unstable man broke into her family's home, trapping and terrorizing them for hours. Now she's Savannah's top hostage negotiator, defusing powderkeg situations with a talent for knowing when to give in-and when to jump in and take action. It's satisfying work-and sometimes those skills come in handy at home dealing with her agoraphobic mother, still traumatized by the break-in after all these years, and her precocious seven-year-old, Carly. It's exactly that heady combination of steely courage and sensitivity that first attracts Duncan Swift to Phoebe. After observing her coax one of his employees down from a roof ledge, he is committed to keeping this intriguing, take-charge woman in his life. She's used to working solo, but Phoebe's discovering that no amount of negotiation can keep Duncan at arm's length. And when she's grabbed by a man who throws a hood over her head and brutally assaults her-in her own precinct house-Phoebe can't help but be deeply shaken. Then threatening messages show up on her doorstep, and she's not just alarmed but frustrated. How do you go face-to-face with an opponent who refuses to look you in the eye? Now, with Duncan backing her up every step of the way, she must establish contact with the faceless tormentor who is determined to make her a hostage to fear . . . before she becomes the final showdown.
