Great *beginner* book

This is a fantastic, quick read. You spend way more time meditating than reading. It introduces you to a few different types of meditation and really shows improvement if you follow the book's schedule faithfully.

A Place to Start...

Of all of the reviews that I have written on this site, this one probably is the most difficult to write. Davich does a very good job of describing the basics of meditation. But how does one generalize about meditation?

For someone who wants to get started with meditation with minimal fuss, 8 Minute Meditation is the book to use. I think that 8 Minute Meditation is fairly typical of what the publishers are focusing on these days: it is short, to the point, and it uses an easy-to-read style that helps a lot. Shorter, easy books seem to the new norm in publishing.

Davich does a good job of anticipating questions that the reader will have & he provides sensible answers. Most of his advice - in the questions and throughout the book - focuses on the practical (and not the mystical) aspects of meditation.

One thing that does keep me from giving 8 Minute Meditation a higher rating is that I think that meditation is a difficult subject to generalize about. Each person's inner world differs & each person's reaction to meditation will likewise differ. Sometimes the "one-size-fits-all" advice Davich provides struck me as lacking in depth. I've noticed that a few other reviewers found the same thing; so, 8 Minute Meditation's greatest strength and weakness is its brevity.

Having said that, 8 Minute Meditation is the best introductory meditation guide that I have seen. It will get you started on your meditation right away.

Had to write a school term paper

I had to write a school term paper. I chose Meditation. After researching it a bit I changed the paper's subject. I only looked through this book I have not read it.

Great book and program for starting meditation

This book was exactly what I was looking for. I had never meditated before and this wonderful 8 week program really got me started. Each week there is a different technique to try and it only takes 8 minutes a day. The approach is very simple and easy to follow. The author is very encouraging, as many beginners (including myself) don't necessarily "get it" at first and think they're doing it wrong. Eventually, I had my own "Ah ha!" moment and believe the practice is doing me a lot of good. In addition to setting the foundation for a daily meditative practice for relaxation, it has also helped me deal with any stressful events by providing a technique to slow down for a minute, take some deep breaths and calm myself.

One additional note - this book does not have any religious references and separates the meditation from any sort of religious spiritual experience. It focuses simply on meditation for reducing stress, inducing relation and increasing focus and happiness.

I would highly recommend this book to any beginners. With only 8 minutes a day, this is a do-able program!!!

Worthwhile Reading

Very approachable, this is a highly readable introduction to the theory and practice of meditation. Various techniques are discussed, and practical exercises lead the reader into the practice.

reviews: page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8

In recent years, mainstream Americans have begun to come around to meditation in a big way-and scientific studies are suggesting that the physical and mental benefits are solid and real. But to many, it remains something mystical and inaccessible...and spiritually-oriented tomes on the market don't do much to make it easier.

As interest in meditation continues to grow, this book offers a simple, no-nonsense program to help beginners experience reduced stress and increased focus in only eight minutes a day. Designed by meditation expert and bestselling author Victor Davich, this program teaches the basic principles of meditation while clearing up the misconceptions and myths that too often get in the way.
