not up to par

I will start out by saying that there was nothing wrong with the mystery aspect of the novel. It was good except I thought it spent too much time back in 1953. It was a little annoying. The main reason I love the Kinsey Milhone stories is well because of Kinsey's fiesty personality, her tendancy to be crabby, and her all around attitude about life and the people in it. In this book, it could really have been written about any other detective because you really did not see any of Kinsey's personality in it anywhere. There were maybe two statements that showed off her personality and the rest was just hum drum. I thought Q is for Quarry was my least favorite book but I think this one just topped it out. Please go back to letting Kinsey solve present day crimes that shows off her many talents and leave the far off past in the far off past.

A project for Kinsey

I really liked this book, even better than other Kinsey books. There wasn't much Santa Teresa sentimentality in it or Polish food reviews and amazing (sexually active) 90-year olds. The whole thing was developed like a real-life project and the problem was solved very methodically by Kinsey being a master project manager. The landscapes and little towns and the people of the Southern California coast were still very vivid. The characters sounded real and most importantly there was closure at the end (something that I've been missing with Martha Grimes lately). Of course, I do not know much about England, but California is dear to my heart and it is described so beautifully! Overall, I would highly recommend this book if you want to lose yourself in a dream space for a few days!

ps. The deflowering of Lidia when she was only 14 years old by a 17-year old boy was so factual and detailed yet not pornographic (like a Rembrandt painting). This is masterful writing. Congratulations Sue Grafton!

Thirty-four years ago, Violet Sullivan put on her party finery and left for the annual Fourth of July fireworks display. She was never seen again.

In the small California town of Serena Station, tongues wagged. Some said she'd run off with a lover. Some said she was murdered by her husband.

But for the not-quite-seven-year-old daughter Daisy she left behind, Violet's absence has never been explained or forgotten.

Now, thirty-four years later, she wants the solace of closure.

In S is for Silence, Kinsey Millhone's nineteenth excursion into the world of suspense and misadventure, S is for surprises as Sue Grafton takes a whole new approach to telling the tale. And S is for superb: Kinsey and Grafton at their best.
