Solid addition to the series

I enjoyed this instalment in the Sookie Stackhouse series but it was also slightly disappointing.
The story is loosely about the weres and shifters announcing their existence to the world and people's reactions to that. The mystery element is who killed a were and crucified them outside Sam's bar. There is a brief hint of the FBI being aware of Sookie's talents; this is introduced and then let go (not in a really satisfactory way either!) - perhaps for future novels.
The mystery element is one of the weakest in this series and the character development, relationship development stuff was also pretty flat. Sookie's relationship with Eric changes slightly and at the end of the book it is seemingly possible that her decision to be with Eric or Bill is not resolved and will be brought up again in future instalments.
Three characters are dispatched, never to return, but they are not dead - which was kind of interesting.
I read it in a day - so I guess it had something going for it but I still think it is not one of the best in the series.

Love this book

This is a great addition to the sookie stackhouse series. There is more Eric, Bill and Sookie love triangle as well as darker times for Sookie. This novel leaves the reader anxious for more, will Sookie ever be the same?

Another Winner for the Sookie Series (Warning: May Contain Spoilers)

I felt like the story of this book was left unfinished, and I'm sure Charlaine Harris will touch on all of the missing pieces in the next Sookie book. Sookie was pulled in a million different directions in this installment. She's asked to reconnect with her telepathic cousin, her growing attraction to Eric is consummated, Bill is still telling her he loves her, and some foreshadowing indicates there may be a relationship forming other than friendship between Sam and Sookie. In addition, Quinn makes an attempt to get back in Sookie's good graces.

There was a LOT going on in this book, and even with all of Sookie's love life upheavals, she lands in the midst of a fairy war. By the end of the book, she's been through so much that I think we'll find book #10 much darker and heavier. At the end, her great-grandfather Niall tells her he won't be visiting again but that the vampire isn't a bad man and he loves her. He doesn't tell Sookie WHICH vampire, but I strongly suspect it's Eric. When Eric and Sookie finally made love, he said something to her in his ancient language that she didn't understand--twice. My suspicion was that he told her he loved her. His actions are screaming that he longs to protect and be with her. He even offered to "put her up" as a sort of mistress in his home...and he's never invited any woman other than Pam to his home.

I cannot WAIT to see what Charlaine Harris has in store for us next. These books are strangely addictive and realistic at once.

A little let down.

I started reading the Sookie Stackhouse series in the last year after having co-workers recommend the series on HBO, TrueBlood. I watched the first season of the show and wanted to know what happened next so I purchased the first 8 books in the series. I enjoyed those first books a great deal and was certainly looking forward to this novel. This leads me to my obvious title in that I was rather let down with this installment of the series. I was certainly not left with the feeling that any progress in the story line had been made. I will try not to provide spoilers for those that enjoy the series and plan on reading this.

The incredibly twisted love interests that Sookie has don't seem to be any less twisted and the sudden dismissal of certain characters seems to be out of place with the previous books in the series. I can understand the need to consolidate the story line a bit at this point, but this seems a bit extreme. I'm left with a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth and certainly none of the previous sympathy or connection I had with Sookie on a fundamental level. My disappointment with the character and the direction the author has taken her in is heart wrenching. I so want to enjoy this novel because the first 8 were excellent, but I will have to settle for the hope that the next installment will provide more satisfaction.

Enjoyable but not the best in the series

I've only recently gotten into the Sookie Stackhouse series, after watching True Blood on TV. I read all 9 books within two and a half weeks, that was how hooked I was. I must say I enjoyed every second I was reading and it kept me up, sometimes till 3 in the morning! Having said all that, even as a new fan, I can tell that book 9 seemed a little haphazard. I'm not going to criticise the plot as that is the work of the author and I'm sure she's put a lot of thought into it. I did enjoy book 9 and I was drawn in fairly quickly, but I did get distracted by the continuity issues as mentioned by other reviewers. It made me go, hey wait a second... Also, there were too many sub plots that were slowly built up, only to be resolved too quickly, almost as a by the way. These issues are definitely not going to stop me from reading book 10 when it does come out, but I hope everyone involved in putting the book together will ensure better quality control. There are a lot of fans out there, both old and new, and I'd like to think we deserve better.

Now an HBO original series, True Blood-the New York Times bestselling Sookie Stackhouse series continues.

Except for Sookie Stackhouse, folks in Bon Temps, Louisiana, know little about vamps-and nothing about weres.

Until now. The weres and shifters have finally decided to reveal their existence to the ordinary world. At first all goes well. Then the mutilated body of a were-panther is found near the bar where Sookie works-and she feels compelled to discover who, human or otherwise, did it.

But there's a far greater danger threatening Bon Temps. A race of unhuman beings-older, more powerful, and more secretive than vampires or werewolves-is preparing for war. And Sookie finds herself an all-too human pawn in their battle.
