Good characters, good plot, good story
Historical Romance writer Elizabeth Hoyt brings us the first in a new series, The
Legend
of the
Four
Soldiers
. Filled with glimpses of a captivating fairytale, and the emotional rollercoaster of a budding romance, this one is sure to not disappoint.
As legend depicts, one day as four soldiers were walking their way home from war, they came upon a T in the road. They pondered which path to follow, but each thought their fate lay in different paths. One soldier strayed from the path and ran into the forest. His name is Iron Heart and this is his story.
Lady Emeline Gordon is a widow who chaperones young girls, teaching them for pin money the proper etiquette and propriety in London. Her young son Daniel, and her aging aunt live with her. Her life seems to be going along splendidly well, until one day the new neighbors move in.
Samuel Hartley is a handsome, wealthy American and a former soldier. His uncivilized ways unnerve Emeline. She just knows he does things to irritate her, like wear his moccasins to a very high society ball. He has moved back to London after a long absence because he believes his regiment was betrayed. He is determined to find the culprit and see justice served.
Bringing his younger sister to live with him serves as an easy excuse to get closer to the intriguing, beautiful Lady Emeline. Proposing to hire her to chaperone his young sister, he is soon enlisting her help with his investigation. Lady Emeline's brother had died while serving with Samuel. She believes that by helping him, it brings her closer to her brother.
As the investigation brings them closer to the identity of the betrayer, the sparks heat up between Emeline and Samuel. Will she be able to hurdle over the obstacle of his barbaric ways to let him come closer? Or will society harden her heart against him? Can Samuel overcome his guilt of letting his regiment down so he can be truly free to love?
The background of the era is well-painted. The characters are well-developed and emotions run high. The plot is twisted very well, and the pages flow with magic. Although I didn't really come to love the heroine, the secondary characters were vibrant and full of life. I will definitely be picking up the next in this new series.

enjoyable and sensually titillating novel.
Samuel Hart is haunted by the trauma of a war where all but a handful of his comrades were killed. He believes someone betrayed them and led them into an ambush. An American he has recently come to England continuing his personal investigation. His unconventional manner sets "The Ton" into a flurry of scandalous gossip and young woman hearts are set aflutter. One woman whose attention he has caught is his next-door neighbour... the prim and proper Lady Emeline Gordon.
Lady Emeline Gordon is set to marry one of Samuel Hart's comrades Lord Vale. Widowed with a young son she is used to taking care of them and looks as her upcoming marriage has a solid financial union. She is reserved, cool and detached and looks at her soon to be husband as a friend only. When she meets Samuel, he asks her to be a mentor and chaperone for his sister Rebecca during their three-month stay. Intrigued with this man and unconventional approach and dress, Emeline agrees to meet Rebecca and soon accepts the position. While she spends time with Rebecca, a spark is ignited between her and Samuel making her realize that she's never experienced the sensual and passionate nature of two people being in love. Casting doubts on her heart and soon to be future.
You know what I like about Elizabeth Hoyt's novels...everything! Her novels are engaging, flowing smoothly from start to end. Her characters are human with real flaws and emotions. Emeline was a heroine that was independent and a natural survivor. Making her newfound passion a difficult road as she was caught between undying love and her sense of duty and loyalty that would provide her lifelong security. Samuel awakened a hidden desire in her and he himself was a selfless and kind gentleman despite being deeply scarred and tormented from a war and planned massacre that saw many of the
soldiers
and friends around him die.
TO
TASTE
TEMPTATION
is the start of "The
Legend
s of the
Four Soldiers
" series from Elizabeth Hoyt and it's a great start to what promises to be an exciting series. The novel had just the right amount of unanswered questions that have me anxiously awaiting the next novel in the series. Elizabeth never ceases to provide a well-rounded, enjoyable and sensually titillating novel. Her sex scenes between these characters are primal and over whelming sexy...making Samuel a well sought after hero in my book. I also really enjoyed the tale that started each chapter Iron Heart. It was interesting and poignant to the story. I look forward to reading the next instalment in this series.

~ Book Reviews By Bobbie ~ A Delicious & Entertaining Read!
Lady Emeline Gordon is the model of a cultured, refined English widow.
Everything in her life is predictable and rather dull, that is until the extremely wealthy Samuel Hartley walks into her life.
With the request that she act as his sister's chaperone for the season among the haut ton, Emeline becomes more and more attracted to the brooding and...

cat and mouse
TO
TASTE
TEMPTATION
is a more conventional romance novel from Elizabeth Hoyt than any installment in the Prince series, but it still wins with it's compelling, fully rounded characters and beautiful style.
Samuel Hartley is literally and metaphorically a hunter: patient, clever, and relentless. He plays a cat and mouse game with the heroine, Emeline Gordon - he enjoys the chase and her resistance only eggs him on further. This is a metaphor that Hoyt draws upon repeatedly - Samuel is always the cat, and Emeline is always the mouse.
Emeline has gotten a lot of flack in the reviews, and I think that's a shame. She is a classic ice queen character - correct and withdrawn to the point of being frosty. But Hoyt makes sure that we understand how Emeline became the person that she is: she's an aristocrat, and one by one all the men who were to shoulder the burden of managing her life - her brother, her husband, and then her father - died. Emotionally bereft and totally unprepared, it fell to Emeline to manage the family finances, raise her young son, and take care of her elderly aunt. She rises to the challenge, in a large part thanks to her increasingly rigid self-control.
I thought it was very clear that Emeline felt like she was walking a tightrope, with a horrible abyss yawning beneath her. No wonder Samuel makes her panic, snap, and flee. He unbalances her, sends her wobbling on that tightrope, and Emeline is terrified. So she lashes out at him, like a mouse trapped by the claws of a cat would try to bite.
Emeline is not particularly nice to Samuel - but then, Samuel is not particularly nice to her, either. He hunts her down like a fox in a hole. It's all very primitive and sexy, but meanwhile we see enough of Samuel's soft and caring side, and enough of Emeline's strong and vibrant nature, to know they will work as a couple once the predator has captured its prey.
I really can't wait to read whatever Hoyt comes up with next, I'm excited to have discovered her.

The ton loves nothing more than a good scandal, and they're giddy with the appearance of wealthy Samuel Hartley. Not only is he self-made, American, and in the habit of wearing moccasins, but he is also notorious for fleeing a battle in which several English gentlemen lost their lives. What the ton doesn't know, though, is that Samuel is in Londonbecause of this massacre. He believes his regiment was given up to the enemy and won't rest until he finds the traitor.
Lady Emeline Gordon is captivated with Samuel. Not only does he defy convention with his unusual dress, his sensual smile, and his forthright manner, but he survived the battle that killed her beloved brother. Samuel suspects that the person responsible for her brother's death is Jasper Renshaw, Viscount Vale, a family friend since childhood--and Emeline's fiancé. Despite Emeline's belief in Vale's innocence and her refusal to break off her betrothal, she and Samuel begin a passionate affair. But can their relationship survive the fallout from Samuel's investigation?
