From Alabama to Georgia
After a book like 'gods in Alabama', it's no surprise that I was more than expectantly waiting to see what Joshilyn Jackson had in store next. I hate to compare since one book is different to the next but this failed me, not miserably but it still failed me nonetheless. The author does her usual excellent characterizations; her characters are so dynamic and vibrant, you wonder if they are not indeed real people. It's genius. The situations which the characters of this book encounter and inhabit are just the opposite. They are hard to believe. After the incredible, wonderful birth of Nonny, the other scenes come off as contrived. These refreshing characters seem to me like they were being forced to recite lines in a constraining play and they were just dying to break out of the box.
It's a good read, not a great one. I think the author under-used her characters. The plot was lifeless but it is worth getting to know these wonderful characters, They feel like they could be your next-door neighbors. Also, the paperback cover is very summer-y and pretty ( I want that dress and flip-flops ) and is made out of some special sort of paper that feels wonderful to the touch. I will still be looking forward to 'The Girl Who Stopped Swimming'.

Between
,
Georgia
by Joshilyn Jackson: Jackson says in the first sentence in the book that Between is a real place but she's never been there. I have. I drove through it regularly in the early 1980s on Route 78 going from Athens to Atlanta. I would always exclaim, "Here we are, in Between." My teenage son would moan and began to chide me when the town sign came into view, "Don't say it, Mom." I saw a row of unpainted houses with porches complete with sloping roofs and old sofas alongside one side of the highway. Apparently there are several streets behind it and a town square; I regret never turning off and investigating. This is a pretty good novel. No one will mistake it for great literature but no one will go away feeling like they wasted their time. Nonny, the main character, is the link between the Fretts and the Crabtrees whose 30-year feud keeps the entire population (90 in Between) on their toes. Nonny also drifts between her home and Athens, her two disparate lives rarely intertwining and she wavers between her husband and a new direction. Generations of Fretts and Crabtrees show up, throw up, blow up, grow up and generally create mischief. The plot moves quickly and caroms nicely. Must this happen in Between? No, it could be any small town in the world but placing it in Between, Georgia adds zing. Yep, I should have turned off the highway and taken the byways.

Really good read
This is the second J. Jackson novel I have read and I really liked this one even better that "Gods in Alabama". I enjoyed her intro into living with a deaf and blind person. THat was interesting. I recommend it.
Well worth reading
Nonny Frett lives her life in
Between
...between Atlanta and Athens; between the family that reared her and the family that gave her birth; between a man who is no good and a man who's family too good for his family; between a gentle, talented mother who is deaf and blind and a coarse, brash aunt who lacks vision and voice; and between who she wants to be and needs to be. This well written book, brimming with contrasts, is well worth reading. In the end it is a story of love, faith, redemption, reconciliation, determination, and hope. Many reviewers have given specifics so I have no need to do that. I write this review encouraging the reader to pick up this book and savor it.

Nonny Frett understands the meaning of the phrase "in
between
a rock and a hard place" better than any woman
alive. She's got two mothers, "one deaf-blind and the
other four baby steps from flat crazy." She's got two
men: a husband who's easing out the back door; and a
best friend, who's laying siege to her heart in her front
yard. And she has two families: the Fretts, who stole her
and raised her right; and the Crabtrees, who won't forget
how they were done wrong. Now, in Between,
Georgia
, a feud that began the night Nonny was born
is escalating and threatening to expose family secrets.
Ironically, it might be just what the town needs...if only
Nonny weren't stuck in between.
