Another good book from Victoria Laurie

This was another good story line, with wry comments, some suspese, and good characters. I read her books to relax and take my mind off my day to day stresses. And when I can read a line or paragraph, and laugh out loud, then I am relaxed. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Even Better Than the First

Demons Are a Ghoul's Best Friend is the second entry in Victoria Laurie's Ghost Hunter Mysteries, and it's even better than the first. This time we follow professional medium M.J., her best friend and partner Gilley, and Dr. Delicious, Steven, as they investigate a boarding school haunted by a rampaging violent spirit known as Hatchet Jack. M.J. quickly discovers that not only is Jack's malevolent spirit hanging about scaring the current students, but three young boys allegedly killed by him in the 1970s are still "grounded" and cannot cross over into heaven. The perils of ghost hunting are very real as M.J. and her friends experience violent outbursts from the undead as they pursue Jack in an effort to send him back into the depths from which he gains strength forever.

Decidedly creepy and page turning, Laurie has definitely brought her characters to life in this book. I was impressed that she knows so much about actual ghost hunting and knowledgably uses this in her writing. My only problem with the book was the constant way Steven misuses English; once or twice is fine--I get it, he's not an American--but repeatedly, and from a doctor, just doesn't sit well. Other than that, this is a fun ghost story that engages from beginning to end. Paranormal fans wil particularly enjoy this series, and this second entry shows that Laurie is truly hitting her stride.

Love the Ghost Hunter series!

Victoria Laurie's books are fun, light, and easy to read. If you like the Ghost Hunter series, try her Abby Cooper series, which I think is even better.

One of Her Best

Ghost hunter M.J. Holliday has a tough task on her hands - her friend Karen (Teeko) has asked her to investigate some ghostly activity at a New York boarding school. Some of the students there claim to have been chased by a ghost carrying an ax. M.J. doesn't have much time to work on this case - renovations at the school start in a week. As M.J. and her partners, Gilley Gillespie and Dr. Steven Sable, work to send Hatchet Jack back to the portal he came from, they also work to free the spirits of three young boys. This isn't easy - outside of the students, no one will admit to knowing anything about Hatchet Jack or any missing boys. The deeper M.J. digs, the more secrets she uncovers - secrets that someone is willing to once again commit murder in order to hide the truth.

"Demons are a Ghoul's Best Friend" is the second book in Victoria Laurie's delightful Ghost Hunter mystery series (the first was What's a Ghoul to Do? (Ghost Hunter Mysteries, Book 1)). I love the ghost busting premise and Laurie does a good job of making it realistic. M.J. is a nicely written character and her ability to communicate with the dead is believable - I especially liked the side encounters she has with characters such as telling a policeman what happened to another cop and helping the deceased cop to "cross over". She is seemingly fearless and her tendency to rush into dangerous locations adds much to the excitement in the novel. Her partners - the gay and not so fearless Gilley and Steven "Dr. Delicious" Sable - are also well done. Laurie treads a fine line with Sable's tendency to mangle phrases - it could be irritating but she manages not to overdo it. The ghost aspects of the book are well done in many ways. The ghost of Hatchet Jack chasing after the students is a nice plot line and adds not only scary moments but a mystery as M.J. tries to find out not only who Hatchet Jack was, but who the three young boys were. While I figured out some of the plot aspects before the end, there is a nicely written twist at the end involving the ghosts and some of the "live" characters.

"Demons are a Ghoul's Best Friend" is a nicely done paranormal cozy mystery.

Victoria Laurie's ghoulishly great follow-up to What's a Ghoul to Do? in her new Ghost Hunter Mystery series Northelm Boarding School on Lake Placid has the worst bully of all-a demon by the name of Hatchet Jack. M.J. Holliday, along with her partners Gilley and the handsome Dr. Steven Sable, are ready to send him back to the portal from whence he came. The school's summer construction, an uncooperative dean, and the very tempting Dr. Delicious are all trying to distract M.J. from her ghost hunting. But with a demonic disturbance as great as Hatchet Jack, she must focus and show no mercyto send him to detention for an eternity-in hell.
