From J. Kaye's Book Blog

"Every twenty-six thousand years, the earth, sun, and moon align at the exact center of the Milky Way...and all Hell breaks loose."

That's the first sentence. The book starts in with non-stop action and I can't believe I am saying this, but it's too much. I really didn't feel Anderson took enough time to set the background up. It was way too hurried for me and I didn't find the story or characters believable.

Although this wasn't for me, I believe fans of J.R. Ward will fall in love with this book, which is the first of book in the Novels of the Final Prophecy series.

JR Ward and Angela Knight Give this Great Reviews

Hey all: So Night Keepers was AWESOME! I finished it last night and think a lot of you will love it. I fully recommend. It's not what I'd call an easy read ... a lot of rich material in the first book. But I couldn't put it down. The research the author did was amazing.

Basically, there is a band of people who highly influenced the Egyptians and the Mayans ... and every 26000 years an intersection occurs where everything lines up and world could come to and end. Mayans have a count down calendar and most references are to them and the peoples' relation to them. At the end, the poles reverse polarity and it basically hits the fan. These people, night keepers, are a big part of what stands between death and destruction of the earth as during this time the demons can escape into the world. It's slated for 2012 to be the end of the world and I think the author will release the final book at that time. The books opens with the fact that its four years until doomsday ... and will it play out as foretold ... or not ???

About 24 years ago, from present, the king of these people (Night keepers) had a plan to save his family early and prevent the big battle from ever occuring. It backfired and just about the entire population was killed by the big evils ...... or was it? Apparently, the king's son, his sister and about a dozen babies were saved because they'd yet to be marked by magic. The barrier, which feeds their power, was closed by the king ... and the king's son hoped that was the end and the big war wouldn't happen.

Well enter evil guy making sacrifices and re-opening the barrier to let the demons escape. None of the living night keepers have experience with their power. For all but the king's son, who was nine when most were killed, and a few of his protectors, it's just stories passed down by the folks who raised them. They're normal folks, accountants, game creators, etc. The slated king and his few surviving protectors are the only ones with experience with magic. Only one elder night keeper survived and he's jaded to say the least. Very screwed up.

So basically, the king's son has to send out a call to gather all the night keepers and train them to stop the end from beginning. He saves a human woman, who is more than a human woman ...Leah ... but no one is sure what exactly she is ... and those who survived the battle 24 years ago aren't thrilled about her and her influence on the soon to be king. The story is primarily these two, but unlike many other series like SKs and Feehans ... you meet all the young night keepers in this book and get to know them and are invested in their future and watching them try to come together to make a team. What will happen? Read the book. ;-)

But the rest in the series will be about the characters we meet in the first book ... with a few foreshadows of others to become involved and a few other characters thrown in. Wow is all I can say. Fascinating!!! It received great reviews from Angela Knight and JR Ward which is what turned me onto to noticing the book.

Anyway ... I highly, highly recommend.

3-Star Romance, 5-Star Story

I picked this book up on a whim, and I really enjoyed it. This is supposed to be the story of Striking-Jaguar (heir to the mantel of King in the Nightkeepers World) and Detective Leah Daniels. What you get is the story of Strike, a man being forced to choose between myths and legends that he practically cut his teeth on, and Leah, an obsessed cop tumbling into a world she never would have believed existed.

There is very little actualy "romance" between Strike and Leah. But the interaction between the pair (after the first two meetings) is believable. They're both torn by the rolls that Fate is dictating they have, and what they want.

The side characters also help seal the deal for me. Here you have a group of people that have grown up thinking Nightkeepers were all a really cool bedtime story, and then Surprise! Not only are they real, but you are one, and you have to give up your perfectly normal life to move to New Mexico to learn to use magic so you can save the world.

I've read books where people have to give up their lives and they were like "Okay, when do I start?" Here you have people struggling to keep a hold on what they were before. And that was a MAJOR part of Strike's problem.

Now, a few of the other reviews mention how detailed in Mayan history this book is. I won't lie and say I hardly noticed. You will feel like you are being brow beaten with all of the details that Andersen. And I, for one, appreciated it. It was refreshing to have things explained, when there are so many books out there now that will have things (big, MONUMENTAL things) happen, and the characters would just explain it away as "Oh well, it's fine, it's in our nature."

This is one of the few books that I've come across where everyone knows what Fate has in store for them, and they continue to fight against it... even if it proves futile.

Can I recommend this to any and everyone? No, I would never do that. There are a few holes in the romance and I'm sure there are plenty of people that would have a major problem with that. But If you're looking for a good story that goes into a lot of details, then give this a shot.

The exciting debut of a new paranormal romance series

As a Miami narcotics detective, Leah Daniels never knows how her day will turn out. But she certainly never expected to be strapped to a stone altar, the human sacrifice in an ancient Mayan ritual meant to coax up a demon from the underworld. Or that she?d be saved by a handsome warrior-priest king who claims to recognize her from his visions...

Jaguar Strike wishes he hadn?t made the mistake of reuniting his fellow warrior priests, or broken the law by saving their chosen human sacrifice. Now, he has no choice but to join forces with Leah and invoke dangerous magic in a death-defying race against the end of time.
