OK, but try Norah Lofts.....
I like Ken Follet, especially his earlier
book
s.
Pillars
of the
Earth
was good; I don't regret reading it. I love them long and it was certainly that. I read a Norah Lofts book called A Wayside Tavern that was very similar, but much better. It traced an English tavern from 400-1970. I found it much more interesting......but I love Norah!
The birth of the Magna Carta
A political masterpiece about the birth of the rule of law, leading to the Magna Carta in early England. Justice and law prevail, but just barely, over the powers of violence and fear. The conflict is set on a grand stage, with an action packed plot that makes it hard to put down. Really gives you a feel for medieval society, I found it both educational and entertaining.

The Pillars of the Earth
Heard this reviewed and recommended on
Oprah
's
Book
Club
. Although it was written quite a few years ago, Oprah had recently read it and so glad I heard her review. I've always enjoyed Ken Follett, but I think this was his masterpiece. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
sexual and atheist pornography
Though Follett is a talented storyteller, this
book
has no real purpose other than to reinforce his atheistic beliefs. There are amoral religious characters and the moral ones are eventually contradictory. His heros are anti-Christian, but to Follett's dismay, no doubt, provide real believers with proof of their ugliness. I can only imagine that scenes like the one where the "witch" Ellen urinates on the Bible are simply atheist pornography.
The writing style isn't anything to write home about, but I can't really criticize that--this is a monumental work that deserves credit aside from the incessant porn.
In the end, I'm still looking for a good historical fiction.

So Readable--This Story ENGULFS You!
As I read this
book
, something felt so familiar to me about it--so I checked when it was published: a long time ago! I already read it! No problem, though...it's plenty good enough to want to read several times over. Everyone gets something different from the book; my own strongest feeling was great thankfulness to be living in this time, in this country--the terrible trials and dangers of middle-ages life were almost incomprehensible. This book is riveting from page one, and even though it is very long I finished it in only a week--I honestly could not put it down. It 'feels' very real, you are completely bathed in sounds and sights and atmosphere; you feel you are almost there. The story is wonderful and heart-tugging, and has a satisfying ending--one that could really happen. I was a bit put off by the sexual content--most of it was gratuitous and a few places read exactly like a forum in a cheap men's skin mag. Not interesting, and not relevant. All in all, however, this was an extraordinary adventure. Worth every minute spent on it...
