The book is accessible enough to let anyone interested in the field learn and understand all the different approaches in the field since S.Freud.
Thats over 100 years of psychoanalytic thinking.
Truly amazing how both authors have synthesized such a complex and abstract thinking of more than one hundred years into a fluid yet accessible reading of about 250 pages.Simply brilliant...

As a psychiatrist and senior supervisor of psychoanalytic psychotherapy trainees, I have chosen this book as an introduction for all trainees to read. One cannot go beyond it. It will serve as a revision for those who are familiar with psychoanalytic theories, but is excellent as an introduction to new students who have not read the history of psychoanalytic ideas. The authors certainly succeeded in overcoming the esoteric and alien quality that pervades a number of psychoanalytic texts and approached important ideas in a plain language style that is easy to read and easy to grasp. It is in fact a concise history of psychoanalysis from Freud to the present,minus the jargon. I highly recommend it.

With any book I red so far from Stephen Mitchell what really amazes me is, how easy it is for this guy to fly through over a century of really compelling and dense psychoanalytic stuff without even sweating it.
But is not it what a brilliant mind is about?Making you feel how easy it is to achieve the most complicated task...
In this book Margaret Black and Stephen Mitchell put together an amazing cross comparison study reviewing with precision the most prominent psychoanalytic thinking since Sigmund Freud.Thats over 100 years.Because this book is accessible in its level of language and writing style I do recommend it to anyone interested to learn about this amazing field...

Psychology development review

This book is a comprehensive review of development of psychoanalysis from Froid to recent past. Understandable to non-professionals and great for review for psych. students.
A good way to discover the world of psychoanalysis for a layman, but not exacly a recreational reading.
