Absolute marvel

I have worked in the field of volumetric images / medical image analysis for last 5years. This book is a bible for anyone in this field. Surprising not many in my field know about this book. I like several things about the book

1. The author writes to the point.
2. A very simple presentation, make it very easy to understand, even for someone who is reading about a new concept for the first time from this book
3. Does not dwell too much into math, but explains how the why the techniques presented work
4. Excellent collection of references
5. A wide variety of topics are covered.

In sum, a very easy read. Probably a high school kid will be able to understand most of the stuff in this book, but imparts enough information that you can pick up any of the 3D volumetric image analysis research papers and understand most parts of the paper. And I should also mention, unlike a lot of other books, this book is refreshingly thin

Volumetric, or three-dimensional, digital imaging now plays a vital role in many areas of research such as medicine and geology. Medical images acquired by tomographic scanners for instance are often given as a stack of cross-sectional image slices. Such images are called volumetric because they depict objects in their entire three-dimensional extent rather than just as a projection onto a two-dimensional image plane. Since huge amounts of volumetric data are continually being produced in many places around the world, techniques for their automatic analysis become ever more important. Written by a computer vision specialist, this clear, detailed account of volumetric image analysis techniques provides a practical approach to the field including the following topics:preprocessing of volumetric imagesobtaining quantitative measurements in volumetric imagesdetection and modelling of objects in volumetric imagesTo students without prior knowledge of computer vision this book will serve as a self-contained comprehensive introduction. Experienced practitioners and researchers will find it a helpful reference and a source of high level case material.
