"Not-God"

Everyone in a 12-step program should eventually read this account by a graduate student who attended 100 AA meetings and then described them for his dissertation. The dissertation turned into this book. The author praises AA for the true Christian behavior of its members -- unlike many churches he has been in, he notes. He documents his theory that the important feature of the AA program is not just the search for God, but the need for each member to realize that he/she is "NOT God". The not-god aspect of the therapy is the part I most relate to as a recovering alcoholic of over twenty years now. When I got to AA, I was acting as God, running the show, running my life and everyone and everything in it, and running it inevitably into a brick wall going 100 miles an hour and wondering how *that* happened again! When I quit playing God myself, there was room in my life for the entry of something else. That "something else" is different for every member, but the necessary first step of not being God yourself is the subject of this wonderful, healing book. Enjoy.
