Not Free SF Reader
Nice, flowing, easy to read prose. Hilarious 21st century lack of time spent editing mistake : 'on the fench' - new word, hybrid of bench and fence? :)
Bodyguard and crew is broke, ex-SAS mate does him a favor, gets a high profile gig, saves client in a high profile situation on film.
Lots more work done. Old job comes back to haunt him, a pro assassin that tried to kill him is being hunted herself, and uses him to save her life. This assassin is a woman, so Atticus' girlfriend is not happy.
It ends in blood.

Terrific up until the end
SPOILERS: DON'T READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO KNOW! The fifth Atticus Kodiak novel. Kodiak's company gets a mild brush with fame after guarding a high-profile client and being featured in a true-crime book about Drama, the assassin from Rucka's Smoker. But fame comes at a price, as Drama kidnaps Kodiak's principal, then Kodiak himself. She takes him to her Caribbean home and hires him to protect her from another of "The Ten" named Oxford. Much to the disgust of Bridgett and his co-workers, Atticus accepts. The association with a killer may indeed be harmful, as Atticus finds himself willing to do whatever it takes to protect her. This is a terrific book, up until the end. Rucka has created an amoral world of grey, where the CIA offers murder contracts and assassins can be sympathetic; Rucka keeps the drama tense and brutal by killing off two characters, one of whom is rather major. Unfortunately, the ending is spoiled by a totally unbelievable meet between Atticus and Oxford. It's in the dead of night in an abandoned, desolate spot. After showing us for dozens of pages the lengths to which Drama will go to get Atticus alone for a meet, it is simply not credible that Oxford would walk into a trap like that with no backup and no plan, not for revenge or for the money Atticus has stolen or ten times the amount. A pity Rucka dropped the ball at the end there; up until that point, he had me riveted.

Book gets into your critical space!
I did not know coming into this book that there was a series of previous books with the main character Atticus. Having said that - you have all you need to know in this book about his love triangle, how he became a body guard and who Drama (the assassin) is.
I found it very captivating to say the least. This book allows you into the definition behind
critical
space
and what it takes for an assissin to hit its "mark". I really enjoyed it.
The characters are loveable and the storyline is enough to keep you intrigued until the end.
Final Say - worth a shot! no pun intended!

Rucka takes Atticus for a ride in Critical Space
If you've read Atticus Kodiak in Finder, Keeper, Smoker and Shooting at Midnight be warned that in
Critical
Space
his character takes a different course. Rucka has decided to step up the level of life and death in this thriller and you will eat up the suspense. It's hard to put down the book at night because you really want to know what else is coming.
Bit of spoiler:
My only gripe with the book was that I felt it was a bit unfair to Bridgette as I saw many comments from fans that weren't too thrilled in her reaction to the change in Atticus or understanding to him etc. Well all I could say to that was hey she almost got her head shot how would you feel. I don't think as his friend I'd be too happy with him and Drama/Alena becoming allies either. But then I'm biased when it comes to Bridgette.

My first Rucka book and the very best
When people ask me to recommend a book, this one is near the top of the list, in the company of authors such as Michael Crichton, Jack London (The Sea Wolf), Tolkien, and Catherine Coulter. (An esoteric list, yes. I read a lot, but I don't write about books I don't like.)
This was the first book by Greg Rucka that I picked up, on the recommendation of a friend, and after I finished it, I couldn't wait to read the others. While they're good, I keep coming back to this one because it is very enjoyable, very compelling, and bears reading more than once. If you like action, suspense, and mystery, you'll love this book.

The acclaimed author of Shooting at Midnight has penned a thriller like no other ... the no-holds-barred story of a bodyguard with the ultimate assignment: protecting a woman who also happens to be the most hunted killer in the world...
Code-named Drama, she is a lightning-fast death machine ? a hitwoman sought by intelligence agencies around the world. Drama kills as easily as she breathes ... and the last time she and Atticus Kodiak met, they barely escaped each other alive.
Atticus Kodiak has a reputation as one of the toughest bodyguards in the business. He?s used to picking his assignments and calling the shots. But all that changes when he is forced to take on Drama as a client ? the last person he ever imagined would need his protection.
This time, Drama is the one who is running from a killer. She needs Atticus?s help, and she won?t take no for an answer. To prove it, she abducts a high-profile member of the royal family whom Atticus has sworn to protect. He will do almost anything to get the woman back. But what Drama needs from him will destroy his reputation ? and siding with her means he can never turn back.
From New York?s Russian enclaves to the Swiss Alps and the Caribbean, Atticus becomes Drama?s protector, and her only hope for survival as she tries to outlive and outrun her bloody past. But once immersed in Drama?s high-stakes, covert world, Atticus breaks a cardinal rule: He gets to know Drama as a woman rather than just a client ? and it?s a bond that could cost them both their lives.
For the men hunting Drama are capable of unspeakable violence ? of sins that make Drama?s own look like the acts of an amateur. And they will stop at nothing to see her dead....
A masterful work by one of the most unique voices in the field,
Critical
Space combines
high-voltage, high-tech action with swift, terrifying brutality. The result is Greg Rucka?s most explosive thriller to date ? a powerhouse of a novel destined to become a classic of modern suspense.
