Now one of my all time favorite books!
I am a 48 year old male, and although this was written as a children's book, it struck a chord with me and has now become one of my all time favorite books. My children hung on every word as we read it at bed time each night. It is an amazingly poignant tale about a socially awkward kid with behavior problems at a very pivotal moment in his young life. The story is very insightful and well written, and just may move you to tears (as it did me). A truly great read
.
Let's face it. Louis Sachar is pretty much a god in the world of children's literature. They are always funny and meaningful.
Maybe this book is more touching to me since I became a teacher.
There
are always the problem kids that no one understands, and that is the position in which the main character is. Here he finds an incredible relationship with a teacher and is able to change his ways.
Despite all the humor, I found myself bawling at so many spots. It has great lessons and great emotions. It's very real.

Tough guys... have your tissues ready...
A truly unforgettable read for anyone who's in the midst of surviving childhood, and for those of us who've made it.
Centered around the life of self-proclaimed misfit, Bradley Chalkers, and the new kid, Jeff Fishkin, this well crafted story highlights the metamorphosis of Bradley and Jeff through their experiences in school, with classmates, each other, and the new school counselor, Carla.
As a teacher, this is a must read aloud every year. My students love to read along with me, always laughing, always hanging on Louis Sachar's every well-chosen word, even waiting for me to cry at the end - and I never can manage to disappoint them.
Kids will remember '
There
's a
Boy
in the
Girls
'
Bathroom
' the rest of their lives. I read it because I love it and my students love it, but most of all because of the few kids that live in such parallel to Bradley Chalkers that, I believe, they 'need' this book.
