Fun and Beautiful Math Story

I studied abroad in Rajasthan during college, and one of our abroad members studied miniature paintings. When I saw this book, I bought it immediately. The art is gorgeous. The folk tale is clever and can introduce fantastic conversation starters to any classroom. Use it math, social studies, story time, people skills, conflict resolution, etc. I plan to read the first few pages to my class and then challenge them to tell me how many grains of rice she will get by using mathematics. A great daily challenge in literature! + I've never seen it anywhere but on Amazon.com.

simple math, language and illustration - strike a 5 star rating

The title says it all. After I have read this story with my children for the second time, I pondered about if the world of loans take after this mathematical model. I've been searching for material to teach my children to be financially savvy, and thought this story is a good start. I bought one to keep in my library. Children and adults could really benefit from this simple math theory in today's financial world.

almost perfect kids' book!.

WOW! This book is just about perfect. It has everything I look for in a book to read to my 4 year old daughter: A girl as the lead character who exemplifies the qualities I would like to instill in her: bravery, intelligence, cleverness and planning, thinking outside-the-box, math skills, honesty, a sense of justice, generosity, and persistence. I also love the chart at end of the book illustrating the doubling of a number and how powerful that is. The book also raises important issues you can discuss with your child such as 1) poverty and hunger in the world, 2)what makes a good ruler/leader? 3) how much to save and when to expend what you have saved, 4)using only what you need, and not more, 5) sharing. Added bonus- the book takes place in another part of the world, exposing the reader to geography and other cultures and other architectural styles. The only flaw in that regard is that the people all have white skin tone-- if they are Indians shouldn't they have brown skin tones? Other than that, this book is fabulous. Can we have many more like this please?!

Fabulous Tale of Compassion and Courage

This is a fabulous tale of compassion and courage, worth sharing with children and adults alike. Through her intelligence and courage, a young girl helps an entire community. We used it to inspire action on behalf of world hunger. A single grain of rice matters, as does each and every human response to suffering. Solutions are within our grasp. Read it. Share it. Be inspired.

One of the best books for early childhood

Have seen hundreds, maybe thousands of books for early childhood. Saw this book in only one classroom. This is a great book for grades 1-4. Wonderful lesson, wonderful story. Not religious, but a little folk tale. A lot of the folk tales from India and Africa have some religious lesson, this is purely human. Great math lesson also. Surprise even the teacher. Do get for the classroom, or for your home-schooled child, or just as a great gift to help a child appreciate new cultures. Overcoming ADHD Without Medication: A Parent and Educator's Guidebook

A reward of one grain of rice doubles day by day into millions of grains of rice when a selfish raja is outwitted by a clever village girl.
