A raft of hope in a sea of pain

Tertia's ability to write about infertility, the highs and lows, the overwhelming joy and the complete sorrow, as well as the life after infertility are just incredible.

Her views of her life and her children (alive and passed) amaze me and this is a book anyone who is THINKING about having children needs to read.

beautiful story!

I couldn't put this book down and I read it in one night. I found myself laughing and crying throughout the book. For anyone who is going through infertility, her story will touch you.

Amazing, Heartbreaking, Inspirational

I've been waiting for this book for ages to be available in the United States and was very eager to read it. I wasn't disappointed.

The book recounts Tertia's incredible journey through infertility, through countless losses and finally the long awaited birth of her twins Adam and Kate. It's a joyous, although sometimes difficult, read. I cried along with her after the loss of her son Ben, and wish I could have crawled into the pages and hugged her close. What appeals to me the most about this book is that I feel like I'm reading the diary of one of my dearest friends. Her wounds are my wounds, her tears are mine. Tertia has given me an amazing gift by sharing her story. Her journey through grief and her suggestions on making it through the grief makes me feel like maybe I could be a better person to an infertile or someone going through a loss.

This is SUCH a good read and belongs on every bookshelf.

Fantastic Read

I have been waiting for this book to be available in the states. Definitely worth the wait. Tertia is an amazing woman with a great writing style. You will immediately connect with her and her story whether or not you were or are infertile. I read her blog daily (tertia.org) and she is just great and so funny. Wonderful view on things!

I first read Tertia's blog when I was in the throes of infertility...

...and I immediately recognized a friend who not only had "been there done that" before me, but who survived to tell the tale with wit, compassion, and an amazingly generous spirit. Many women undergoing the trauma of infertility (and the emotional roller-coaster of repeated IVF treatments) suffer in secrecy, feeling a sense of shame and loneliness in their pursuit of a dream that seems so easy for others, and yet, so inexplicably unattainable. This isolation makes the experience even more depressing and debilitating. Thank God for Tertia, and others like her, who are willing to bare their souls to a public audience, and let the pain, as well as the hope of the infertility journey, illumine the way for others. In the process of sharing her deeply affecting personal story, Tertia also reveals her indomitable courage, her wry sense of humor, and her unflinching honesty (which refuses to be sugar-coated with platitudes and magical thinking). I felt less alone the minute I began reading her story, and bought her book as soon as it became available. I highly recommend "So Close" for anyone who wants to experience an honest, refreshing memoir which rings with hope, even in the midst of circumstances that could lead to despair. Her story is not just for infertiles, but I can vouch that those who have shared that particular sorrow (whether for one cycle or ten) will find in Tertia a funny, empathetic, and insightful friend.

Meet, marry and make a baby: That's how it's supposed to go, right? What happens when you start trying for a family ... and trying, and trying some more? How far do you go to achieve your dream of having children? So Close is the heart wrenching, exhilarating, devastatingly funny story of Tertia Albertyn's battle with infertility. Tertia wanted a baby so badly she went through nine IVFs. Most people give up after the third. I don't think I am being brave at all. I am just too terrified NOT to try again. In her worst nightmare she could never have imagined that making a baby would take her four years, each treatment bringing her and her husband Marko closer and closer to creating their family. During Tertia's journey everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Until, finally, everything goes just right. Tertia is as hilarious as she is irrepressible, as approachable as she is knowledgeable. If you are struggling with infertility, have triumphed over infertility or have felt empathy with someone who is going through this experience, you will find a friend in Tertia.
