Provocative

Despite the fact that I am not a Christian, I found this book to be fascinating and thought-provoking. I have never before read a book that examined the concept of evil through both a psychological perspective and a spiritual one. Normally "evil" is discussed as an abstract moral concept, but Peck actually creates a concrete definition of it that I found satisfying. What I also respect about Peck is that he is a person who identifies himself as a Christian and yet is still able to see validity and meaning in ideologies that are different than his own. As a medical doctor, he also doesn't seem to believe that religion and science are necessarily at odds with one another, as so many Christians seem to.

My only criticism of the book is that a couple of the case studies of evil people in the book seemed to be based upon little more than Peck's gut feelings and the limited time he spent with them. However, the case studies where he actually treated the patients for an extended period of time are fascinating, and his case study of group evil based upon the actions of a group of soldiers in Vietnam is excellent. Overall, a worthwhile and interesting read.

An Apoocalyptic Acheivement

This book is a must read for anyone experiencing grief or unsettling issues from any relationship whether it be professional, familial or other.
I had a boss from my previous corporate job at OfficeMax. This guy was hired as a Sales Manager after I had served two years. This man turned out to be the epitome of evil as characterised and described in this book. The guy exhibited all the ghastly personality traits of the definitive evil person described in Peck's book.

To recount the true essence of the personality; the man was pushy, bellicose, abusive and often belittling in the presence of coworkers. Unfortunately he was somehow able to elude scrutiny or corrective action due to a incompetent Personnel system misguided by indifference and poor management.

The reason why we need to make parallels of the evildoings described in this book is to draw our own personal experiences in order to understand the essence and manifestation of evil in our everyday lives. Peck also discusses the banality of evil in which ordinary and seemingly good people passively ignore the evil in front of them. Ultimately the true travesty of evil is allowing it to persist. Read this book, it will help you cope when faced with the adversity of evil people.

Interesting observations by a professional

This book condenses a 28 year pychiatric career into some great observations about people you know and meet in everyday life. It is interesting to anyone who has to deal with one of these "People of the Lie". I know that when I do, I have to work overtime to ensure that my sense of well being is maintained in spite of the machinations of a person of the lie. The book was very insightful and saved me from having to become a shrink in order to gain this practical knowledge.

Must Read for Mobbing Mediators

Mobbing experts need an incredible amount of knowledge to understand group evil and its capability to destroy.

The People of the Lie explains the motivation behind group evil - and how it is justified in the minds of group. The book makes an important point: that the group is collectively immature and willing to do things that no one would do alone.

Mobber alone are cowards. But once the group solidifies - it is steelclad and deadly - no matter what it's moral agenda or cause may be.

As an ad hoc destructive ideology, mobbing must be understood for what it is: human evil.
